I hear it time and time again.

  • I'm not going to buy my card because they don't give out honor score awards.

  • I'm not going to pay for a card because I'll never win any of those awards.

  • I want our league to drop the sanctioning because the awards have gotten cheap.

What is it with bowlers?
Sanctioning/certification is about a whole lot more than honor scores.

  • It's about lane beds meeting a standard.

  • It's about standards of lane dressing (whether you believe in the current situation or not)

  • It's about league treasuries being insured against theft.

  • It's about an enforceable body of rules.

  • It's about a recognized national sanctioning body to allow athletes to compete in international venues.

  • It's about keeping track of record setting performances. [*/}
    • How about running the largest tournament venue of ANY sport in the world - every year?

And after all those things, there are some inconsequential awards that people can get.

thoughts?

I've been saying that every time someone bitcas about the USBC cutting awards again.  If a little penny patch or certificate means that much, participate in your local association meetings and create a local awards program.  Our local association gives out plenty of awards beyond those that the USBC gives out.  Men get polos for 700s, women for 6s, and also for the traditional honor scores.  Nice shirts, too, with your name on it.

Frankly, I don't care about awards.  I've gotten plenty, I give most of them back now.  That the best bowlers in the house congratulate me on a good game or good set means ten times more than a patch.

All those who want to go unsanctioned next year, you can forget about bowling sanctioned tournaments, you can be responsible for ensuring the lanes are flat, even, and level, you can ensure that the balls used are legal.  When someone does something you don't like, you can pull your non-existent rule book out and wonder why you chose to give up a perfectly functional, debugged, and comprehensive set of rules that govern far more than just how to keep score and what scores get what awards.

I'm with both of you on this one.  I just get tired of trying to explain it so I steer clear of the thread whining about once in a lifetime awards and such.

First of all the lane beds are checked by your association sec. That can be done and set locally and only done once a year.As far as standard lane dressing that is a "farce" I have seen lanes in my area and others that are so dry the ball won't go 25' before it burns up and the only possible way to get to the pins is with plastic and I have bowled on lanes where the back ends are never stripped because the alley manager can't bowl well when the back ends are dry.The bonding is important, but you can buy insurance locally.I know several insurance people locally that will write a bond for that sort of thing.USBC doesn't enforce the rules, the local people have to enforce them, allthe USBC does is change them from time to time.(most of the time to something rediculious)How many of us members compete internationally? Not many!! As far as the Biggest tournament venue of any sport in the world every year. That may be so,but it is the most lop-sided tourney ever.Any bowler with an average over  is suppose to compete scratch against every Pro Bowler male or female plus every other bowler with that average or higher. You pay ypur money just like they do but what are the odds of winning any real money back?SLIM TO NONE. Then to top that off they put done a shot that most of us have NEVER seen but the PROS have bowled on many times.FAIR,I think NOT!!!!!

Don't forget that sanctioning also includes bonding of the leagues funds.

Personally I find it amusing how people complain about the increase of the sanctioning costs for regular sanctioning.  Sport sanctioning increased even more.  In our local we had 2 Sport Sanctioned leagues and it has increased to 5 this year.

Well, being a secretary of a men's league and being a former member of our local association, I see and hear all the grumblings. But, I do agree with a lot of bowlers when they tell me that they are tired of seeing there fees go up every year.

Regardless of the reasoning, the bowlers do have a valid complaint when their money is going to an organization that makes changes year in and year out.

When will it stop, will it stop with the move to Texas, where in a few years the BPAA will just absorb USBC as we now know it.

from what i have seen most ofthe rules are up to leagues anyway .usbc sets guidelines but the leagues dont seem to be held to any standards except the ones they set. your league bylaws supersede usbc and usbc doesnt get involved as far as i see. So few bowlers no the rules that its not even pertinent through the season. 3 frames or 5 frames for a late bowler. Can you clean after you have shot for score or not. what do you do for bowl outs. These are things covered in bylaws of leagues.
How often are bowling alleys checked for correctness.how many bowl tournaments that you would need to be sanctioned for . And how many bowlers over the course of a season shoot honor scores on avg. probably less than 5 percent,I mean big ones,300 800,290 11 in a row. I know some of you are great and have a czillion rings and plaques ,but there are a few who really look forward to the possibility of being rewarded without having to pay for it twice.

You are not quite correct on that.  USBC rules can be over-ridden by league by-laws, but if there is nothing in the bylaws about a particular issue, then the USBC rule stands.  Some USBC rules cannot be over-ridden, either.

No one cares about the rules until someone breaks them.  As soon as someone's payout is affected, they'll be crying like little girls saying they they broke the rules.

Because bowlers in general are complainers by nature. Why else would someone be concerned with paying .57 cents a week over a 35 week league to be sanctioned. Not to mention a 12 week summer league.

Does that same insurance agent provide comprehensive rule books and average verification for 2M+ customers?
