Bothersome Fact
« on: May 29, 2005, 02:29:21 PM »
I am seeing far too many kids 13-18 yrs of age (all bowlers) having issues with tendonitis in their bowling elbows. That is a very young age to develope such a condition.

To top it off the primary reason (IN MY OPINION)that most of these kids are developing tendonitis in their elbows and wrists is because they are trying to crank the cover off of the bowling ball. Tendonitis when you are young is bad, but as you get older it feels worse and worse.

------just sayin'

The problem is that tehy are all using spans that are too long and bending their elbows trying to get the ball to move...

They are trying to get the big hook the wrong way.....education is the answer!!!!

Just because its natural doesn't mean its right...

Tendinitus usually comes from overruse, but can be extenuated due to stress. I believe the stress of ripping the fingers through does have much to do with it, although bowling too much could also be a culprit.

I don't know about ripping the cover off of the ball.  I'd attribute it much more to an improper fit.  I know female strokers that have tendonitis in their elbow and wrists.  They're not ripping the cover off the ball.

Tough to determine which reason is more responsible for arm problems.  I used to tear the cover off the ball with a Nail or a Black Knight(chicks dig the big bender...lol).  Now, I have a date with the carpal tunnel doc.  However, the fact that I used to put in 20-30 games per week and have a job where I write and type a lot didn't exactly hurt, either.

Two handed... what's wrong about it.

Natural, powerful and very effective from what I"ve seen.

The problem is....

I don't know what the problem is, I'm just saying that because its the way youngsters naturally pick up the ball doesn't mean its right.

Seeing as some 2 handers play though (lofting the ball halfway down the lane in some cases at times) makes me believe that it can't be good for the arm...

But there's more than one reason for tendonitis and the wrong span and pitch will not always cause tendonitis. Not every human body reacts the same way.

The young man who holds the state record series for men in the state set that record when he was 15----858. Games of 300-300-258.
Anyway,at the time he was working at the bowling alley where I bowl and was throwing 5-6 games a day of practice. Then youth tournaments every weekend in traveling team format,or other tournaments. Tehn after doing this he was in a youth league on Sunday night. So we're looking at him throwing 50 or more games per week.
His style is 16-18 mph with at least 300 rpm,and that's a conservative guess. Plus he's not that big physically. He's only 5'6 and 140 or 150 at the most.
In the early part of this past winter's schedule----which was a repeat of the previous year---he developed pain in his right arm and had to lay off for 2 months under a doc's advice.
After watching him I have to hazard a guess that it's too much practice with too many revs. If he keeps that up,my guess is that by the time he's in his late 20's he'll have nothing left in that arm. He spent all of this past season bowling with one of those forearm velcro devices for tendinitis, and that's at 16 years of age now.

Well I would like to say that my hurt elbow was developed from bowling, but I would have to attribute it to baseball........I probably shouldn't have let my coach pitch me so much. I probably should have waited to throw my nasty curve until my arm could have handled it as well, but hey I'm dealing with it without complaining. I was stupid and paying for it.........my fault.

But one of the supposed reasons that he is a coach is because he knows better. Young people seem to need ever increasing levels of physical stress as they grow older. Until muscles, tendons and ligaments grow strong enough together to support additional stress, like throwing a curve or bowling using a very high rev rate of release, doing such physically stressful acitivities CAN, far too easily, result in permanent damage. PLUS people develop at differing rates; what's proper for one person in not always proper for another. But people who don't care or are too nearsighted tend to lump everybody into the same class.

My doctor told me I have to stop ripping the cover off the ball because I was developing tendinitis in my shoulder and back. It really hurt, and since I've been trying to take revs off the ball.
