Want to learn how to drill
« on: November 05, 2006, 10:00:09 AM »
Alright guys,
Since I began bowling I've always been intrigued by the art of drilling.  Well, I still am and want to learn.  There are no real proshops around our area for me to start out in so I was wondering what type of clinics or classes you all would recommend for me.  My house is in real need of a competent person to run the "proshop".  I know it's hard work but I really want to do it.  Hope you can help.

You are not the only one who wants to learn this art. I know Bob's Business out of Minnesota offers classes. Other then that I would suggest finding a good pro shop guy to see if he could help you out. I have had a couple chances to learn but neither have worked out for me.

Contact BrunsNick and see if he can give you any ideas on where to get some dvd's and books. But I can tell you that you will not really learn anything until you start drilling. I read alot of books and watched some stuff on my computer. I thought I knew what to do. But when I started to drill a ball, I realized I knew nothing about drilling. My suggestion is the get a couple house balls and start drilling those so you you do not mess up someones new ball they just bought.

But BrunsNick knows how to drill and he mightbe able to point you in the right direction.

Jeff Ussery and Jesse James run a great week long pro shop training class.  If you're able to travel for a week, I'd recommend checking out www.proshoptraining.com for further information on their classes.

There has to be someone, balls dont drill themself... There must be someone around, even if you have to pay them.

I'd definitely suggest finding a shop operator willing to help you out and show you the ropes. That is how I got my start!

Jeff Ussery is the way to go, the training seminars are top notch.

Purchase Bill Taylor's book, Fitting and Drilling a Bowling Ball.  It contains a bunch of good information.  At least that's a start.  But there really isn't any substitute for experience with this one...

Get a part time job at a house with a proshop... Save up, buy a jig/drill press (or watch for a local sports store going out of business) and buy their drilling set-up and start punching holes.

I know there is no substitute for hands on experience.  I just don't have anyone in the area who really knows what they are doing.  I could learn to put three holes in a ball, that's fine, but that's all our guy knows.  He didn't know was a 3 3/8 stacked drilling was nor how to determine if a x-hole is needed due to excess thumb or finger weight or anything else.  PAP and VAL are people he know's not technical terms.  I am not joking for me to learn I'd have to drive about an 1 1/2 hours one way.  I know . . . I was looking for the easy out, I guess I will have to suck it up and figure out something.  Do any of you know of a good proshop around the Berkshires of MA?   Thanks guys.

I would agree with this statement.  We learn to drill balls on the last day (Friday) of the class, and I always tell our students early in the week that they'll be surprised at how easy it is to actually drill a ball.  It's the knowledge, techniques, and experience leading up to that point that makes all of the difference in a quality pro shop operator.

I agree that the physical act of drilling to specs is the easy part of drilling and one of the easiest things to learn in the proshop business.

The hardest thing to learn is how to properly fit a bowling ball. It is more of an art than a science.

Few proshops are really good at it as evidence from the number of bowlers using skin patch, super glue, and bowlers tape on their fingers and hands. Bowling should not be a painful experience.

IBPSIA (International Bowling Pro Shops and Instructor's Association) also offers a Pro shop training course.  Jeff was one of 5 instructors teaching their course when he was affiliated with Jayhawk.  IBPSIA also offers an Advanced Pro Shop course taught by Mo Pinel and Denny Torgerson.  IBPSIA is recognized as the leading Pro Shop organization in the bowling industry and is now affiliated with the Bowling Proprietors Association of America (BPAA).  I enjoyed the course and I wasn't force fed only information and hardware provided by one company (i.e. Ebonite).  There are several companies who make great pro shop equipment, Ebonite being one of them, but so does Jayhawk, Innovative, and Ultimate Bowling Products.  Ebonite might mention these during their class but why would they promote a competitor during their training clinic?  I prefer a more objective course provided by instructors with no hidden agenda, to sell ebonite products.  This is not a knock against Jeff,  he has been a class guy when I've dealt with him and I am sure his course is great.  Just want to bring another perspective to light.

Jayhawk and several distributors also offer Pro Shop Classes.  Try a web search for Bowling Pro Shop Classes and see what comes up.  There are several options available.

Good luck getting started the industry.

This is actually one of my biggest areas of focus with our class.  I recognize that there are several brands of equipment out there.  One thing I strive to do is to teach methods and procedures that work and are valid on any brand or piece of equipment.  It certainly doesn't do any good to teach somebody something specific to a singular drilling machine.
