want to try sarge easter & rico
« on: April 07, 2008, 03:09:06 PM »
I was looking on brunsnick website and I saw the sarge easter grip and I was like what the. I've heard a lot of people talking about rico drilling everything and I want in. My no mercy is sitting around collecting dust. How would it react with a rico drill? I kind of figure that I would try out both on this ball if my driller nows anything about that grip. I'm pretty sure he knows of the rico drill but I ave never seen a sarge easter grip anywhere but maybe he has some experience with it. Any comments are greatly appreciated.

I may be completely off base, but I would recommend that unless you have a genius for a driller, use something else to drill a Rico.

The reason I say that is that Hammer marks the No Mercy in a way I can't fully grasp. In order to get an aggressive, high-flaring and powerful drilling on that ball, Hammer recommends putting the MB in the track, rather than where just about everyone else suggests putting it (i.e., thumb-positive quadrant between the thumb hole and the VAL).

I've been drilling balls as a hobby for just a few months, but I've been shadowing professional drillers for years and consider myself to have a decent working knowledge of things, and to tell you the truth, I wouldn't drill a No Mercy for myself with a Rico pattern because I wouldn't be confident I was actually doing it according to spec.

Someone else may tell you different, but that's my opinion on it. I'd start with something more conventional for a Rico drill (I have drilled a Thunderstruck Solid and Thunderstruck Pearl with Rico drills). Use the No Mercy to try out your Sarge Easter grip and get something else for the Rico.

JMO.

For once I fully agree with Deadbait.  Like Jess said, some balls like the No Mercy must be drilled according to the drill sheet.  And unless you're having problems with your hand or have a need to completely change the way your ball rolls, why would you want to put a Sarge Easter grip on a ball?

The "Heart" is not the MB.

Two questions: What exactly is Hammer marking with that symbol? And if that's not the MB, where is it ... is it unmarked?

I would try Sarge Easter, Rico, and a 4 step approach instead of 5 or (vice versa) and targeting the breakpoint instead of the arrows (or vice versa) at the same time.

The more different things one does at once...the better!

There has been some discussion of this a while back (around when the NM was originally released).  To the best of my memory, the "heart" indicates the position of a different axis plane through the core.  So instead of the standard "y" axis marked by a typical MB, the Heart indicated the "z" axis.  The whole idea came about the time when the USBC was considering a a rule that would limit the cg to within 1" of the center of grip in an attempt to limit ball reaction.  Ebonite/Hammer showed that by creating a core such as that in the NM, they were able to effectively keep the cg in the center of grip, yet maintain a strong reaction.  I'm sure someone can give a more detailed or technical explanation, but thats the "jist" of things.

That's exactly the reason I ask. I don't use my no mercy at all. The pitch in the thumb is wrong and it is the only ball that I own that sticks to my thumb. Other than that there is nothing wrong with the grip I'm usuing now. Just wante to try something different and give me a reason to use the no mercy again. I knida figured that it would be difficult on this particular ball to rico because the plastic that it comes in shows caution and so I figured there may be some complications.

yeah i agree with them the no mercy was created when usbc was thinking of removing weight holes. the no mercy was made to combat that if it ever passed which it didnt. instead of the mass bias being at 90 degrees its something different which is why the heart must be in the track area.
