Wanting a Job at the local alley... Any Suggestions?
« on: February 13, 2005, 07:20:30 AM »
Hi,

As I have explained in other posts, I am from a small town. We have 2 8 lane alley's. Being so small, the bar is not seperate in either place. I really love to bowl, and I'd really love to work at the alley I bowl league at. Any ideas???

Suggestions I am looking for is what could I do so I am not behind the counter. I think cleaning pins, vaccuming, and possibly oiling the lanes. Any others?

What kind of pay should I work out? Minium Wage? Just free games?

Thanks for any help!

Kyle

I worked in a smaller center once upon a time.  I was trained to work on the pinsetters, drag and strip lanes, oil, clean pins, and resurface damaged balls.  I made $6.50 per hour, part time, and got free practice.

Another perk was discounts on food from the snack bar.  Drinks were free.  The food deal was great because I could prepare all my own eats.  Instead of cooking the normal 5 chicken strips for the basket, I'd cook like 10 or 12.  Small fry?  Not today!  I'd double super size it just because I could.  Hum?  Maybe that's why I was so stinkin' fat back then!!

Working in a center is great even if you get the practice games for free.  Honestly, if I could find a part time job right now where my only pay was unlimited free games, I'd do it.  You can practice on fried lanes and learn how to better play them or, if you're lucky, you can oil lanes with any shot you want and learn how to play on that condition.

Yes, what Mongo said.  I lost my enthusiasm for working in a bowling center when I dropped a 200+ pound Century Stripper on my foot.

That would do it for me too!

I think the difference between Mongo and me is that he's obviously done more of the up front stuff like customer service and management.  I have never had the "pleasure" of doing that!  I wouldn't be able to deal with all the whining and complaining.  I just kept myself in the pits and came out once league was over.  Usually I'd wait about 1/2 hour before going up to avoid complaints about the shot.  Customer service would be rough so I'll agree with Mongo.  It could ruin your love of the game when you deal with constant complaining.  The free practice is still a winner though!!!!!

I worked at the bowling alley here for about a month, then quit. Total BS. Pay was decent, $7/hour, but not worth it. Big alley, 40 lanes, so a lot of people, and not much help. I personally would much rather be a lane man, and work on the machines and oil, then work at the counter. Less dumb people to deal with. I wasn't allowed though, had to be 18 to do that stuff. Just dont expect to get the best job right away.

i worked in a 10 lane center for 4 years and bowled in 3 leagues a week.  i worked in every part of the center except the pro shop.  after 3 years i just about wanted to give up the sport because of the constant complaining about the scores.  the only good thing about the job was the free bowling.

I have not worked in a bowling alley but the same responses you are getting here, is what I got when I inquired about it---stay away from working at the lanes. Just what Ive been told---as far as money goes (if this is a fulltime thing), as far as your love of the game goes, etc. I could see working parttime---maybe. But if you are into bowling now, dont you spend enough time at the bowling alley? Broaden your horizons, you never know what you might find.
