Skill Assessment....
« on: August 18, 2004, 01:00:12 PM »
Okay, it appears there are a lot of "accomplished" bowlers that frequent this site (accomplished = 200+ average).  My question is simply this....

If given the opportunity, do you feel your game is good enough to become Pro?  If yes, what is/are the reason(s) you aren't? (besides money)

I honestly didn't appreciate the quality of bowlers until I traveled and bowled in different tournaments many years ago.  I was one of those bowlers who frequented lanes and leagues within the boroughs of NYC but rarely did I venture out.  I wasn't near a 200+ average (not that now.. LOL) but I was awestruck by the level of competition when I decided to participate in tournaments.

So what say you?  How would you rate yourself?

There's a real difference between a 220 average house bowler and a 220 PBA tour bowler.  House shots are relatively consistent patterns and the PBA shot varies from tournament to tournament.  Many of us (I include myself in that list) are good bowlers.  These guys are incredible.  They have 20 different shots, hand positions, releases, etc. in order to read the very different patterns.  The PBA just made it harder for the rest of us by adding the tour exemptions.

So, besides all the reasons Brenton mentioned I'd add that "accomplished" local bowlers are not as good as we all think we are.

I think the general rule of thumb if you have an interest in bowling on a pro level is that you should be able to average 230+ on any house shot. So wherever you go, you should be able to average 230+ plus on a house shot provided said house knows how to properly lay down oil patterns. That's just my opinion, but from what I've seen the truly good pro bowlers who bowl in my scratch doubles league are averaging right around 230 or higher.

Bowling is simply fun for me.  Making it my main job would destroy that.  Not that I could ever compete against these guys anyhow.

I've been so fortunate, bowled all over the world, have had the opportunity to watch the best go at it.  When you screwup as often as I do, you get to stand around and watch the real guys a lot.

One of the most memorable tournaments was a 2d place finish by one of our posters on here, Brenton Davy.  He lost to Tim Mack BUT I believe he won $100,000 for shooting the only 300 earlier in the tournament.  Best bowling under pressure I have ever seen.  The last 3 shots were perfect!  I know, had I been in that situation, there isn't any way I could have pulled it off.

Now the wife & I just use out vacations to hit different tournaments and meet as many bowlers as possible.

Closest point I thought my game was ready to possibly approach the pro level was during my college years, when I had the chance to bowl across the United States and compete against other college bowlers, some of whom have been doing very well now on the PBA. Alas, I decided to finish my college career and move into the professional working world, thus relgating bowling to more of a league and occasional tournament sport for me.

I would rate my game now as being close to my years of college, but I don't think I have the time and/or money necessary to compete even at a regional level. Having a wife and a daughter makes my priorities much different than when I was younger and single.

Do I have a game good enough to turn pro? Well, yes I could have gotten my card.

Then why haven’t I:

1)   I’ve never been really good enough to win enough money to make a living at it nor to come close to covering expenses at a regional level bowling against the pros.
2)   I was smart enough and had enough common sense during my teens and early twenties to realize number one was true so I got a college education and developed a career where I’m better off financially than 99% of the guys who chased the bowling tour.
3)   I got married and had kids pretty young and had those financial responsibilities as well.
4)   I’ve been fortunate enough to have bowled with and against a lot of bowlers who have made it on tour and many who have tried the tour. While I can be competitive against them at times in the long haul on many different conditions they would dominate me.

I really feel I have had the best of both worlds. I have been able to make my self financially secure, raise a great family, and all along I’ve been able to compete against some of the top bowlers in the world on a weekly basis. Among these are Gordon Vadakin (Wichita State Bowling Coach), Mark Lewis (USA Olympian bowler), Mark Jensen (ABC hall of fame), Rick Steelsmith, Justin Hromek, Chris Barnes, Patrick Healy, Nathan Bohr, Sean Rash, and a bevy of other top collegiate players.

I know a guy on the pro tour who is on the exempt list and I really don't think he can average consistently over 230 on league shots.  As he comes in to our leagues and often shoots around 670s.

We do have guys who are area bowlers up near 240 but once the shot toughens he wipes them up all over the place!

In other words there is not much of a place for John Daly on the tour any more.

But there is lots of room for a smart Hale Irwin.

Accuracy is the whole of the game, power has been deemphasized.

I average 220 on my house but its not the same on a Pro Pattern. My dream is to go pro and be successful for a long time out there but right now I am not ready and here is why

I don't have many big tournaments under my belt..like super hoinke...higher rollers...stuff like that

Its too expensive.

I'm mentally not ready to go out there....bowling the big tournament will get me mentally ready for that.

Yes. I did go pro - joined the PWBA as a regional member a few years ago.
Unfortunately, that opportunity no longer exists for women.

Now - I could join the PBA, but I'm not going to. I'm going to wait 2 years until I'm 50, and eligible to bowl with the PBA seniors. That way, I won't be competing against everyone lofting gutter caps and hitting 20+ MPH.

Now - if a real opportunity for women comes up in the meantime, I'd certainly consider that as an alternative.

Would I ever quit my day job and bowl full time? NO WAY - unless prize funds went up at least 10X.
