Alright, our city tournament is coming up in a few weeks. It has Singles, Doubles, and a Team event. I grabbed my team and doubles partner quickly and signed up. When it came to the singles event I was hesitant. I was kind of on the fence about it. I really wanted to bowl, however something was holding me back. The tournament uses last years book average. I averaged an unhealthy 150 last season. After a bit of coaching and a lot of practice, I'm up to a healthier 171 average. So, I'm up 21 pins from last season. The problem is....I would be bowling in a grouping with bowlers of a 126-150 average range. Now, granted I'm sure there may be some people in the same situation who might go out, to contend with...but it's somewhat unlikely. The competition would likely be below my level (I'm not trying to sound cocky...just being honest.) I inquired about moving up into the bracket for which I would qualify with this years average but was told this was not allowed. It kind of put me between a rock and a hard place. Most people would just be happy to go bowl in that grouping and just take the trophey. I on the other hand chose not to bowl singles for respect of myself and others. Not to mention I saved a whole 6.50. What do you guys think? Would you have done the same?

TJ, how do you know you would beat all those kids with those HIGH handicaps? They could bowl a high game and with handicap crush you, or you could have a bad set, you never know..

yes, I do.. whats handicap based on? 210? if so that gives the 130 average bowlers ALOT of cap..

oh.. I thought all YABA tournaments were based on 210 lol.. I see pro's and Con's to it.. Maybe you did the right thing.

Bones-I would have had a similar problem if this were an issue in team or doubles. My team is in the top flight, and my doubles partner carried a high enough average to put us into the top flight as well. My average in those competitions mean little. Otherwise, if it placed us in a lower flight, then I agree still it gives us an advantage.

Scotts-I knew about the 10-15  pin rule and checked into that long before posting. I was told that for City tourny there is no such stipulation. I'll check into it again just to be sure.

As long as there wasn't a ten-pin rule, there's no reason you shouldn't have bowled.  It's not YOUR fault your city tournament committee chose not to use that rule for the tournament.
