About a year ago I had a similar post on this subject about how centers run their own shops. This time I really got jerked! I was the front runner for a top notch location in NJ. I was networking with people in the area to put in a good word for me and it was working. The new GM of the center said to me that I was the one that they were looking for, I made plans for making a grand opening with one of the ball companies doing a seminar. The only thing the GM was waiting on was to get the final word from the District Manager. Come to find out the district manager step in a place another guy in the center. The problem is this another guy just recently got throw out another center for not paying rent on time and for receiving too many customer complaints for his attitude. I would not have been upset if the other candidate had a rep like a Tommy Semiz, Ed Walsh or a Al Jones but I feel like it was something more to it. The odd thing about it, these people knew i was official and knew I could bring plenty of business to this center.
Let me know what you guys think? I getting nowhere being a big fish in a little pond I'm about ready to wrap this up and call it a day and just drill as a hobby out of basement!

Wish I had an answer for you .. all businesses are the same. It's not always the MOST QUALIFIED that gets the job .. TOP MANAGEMENT, in many cases, has a person in mind when they post a job offering. BUSINESS is tough .. you have to keep plugging away until you get a break .. and always have an alternate plan if things don't go your way! Sorry my friend!

Keep you name clean, don't burn any bridges. Usually, if you give these types of guys enough rope they hang themselves.

Keep campaigning yourself. Your time will come.

Move on.. they had there shot... You get in there now and you will soon see they dont want someone who can run the place they want someone who will be there flunky. That place is about who you know and not about who will do the best job and you dont want to be in that kind of position.

I'm afraid you probably got caught between bribery, relatives, political BS or plain stupidity. Businesses, corporate and otherwise often cut off their nose to spite their face for the sake of a minor kickback by some 2 bit exeutive looking to make a name for himself with the higher-ups.

Keep your chin up. Your skills will be recognized sooner or later. Stray true to yourself and don't give up hope or the "ship".

Bam is right, keep hacking if you really love what you do.

The location I am in had about about 8 guys in a 10-12 year span, and many times when they just had nobody. I have been here 6+ years, wish I had more space.

Location, Location, Location.... keep looking!

If you build it, they will come. If your rep gets good enough, people that really want your service will seek you out, but they prolly don't want to come to your basement.

thanks guys for your kind words and support. the location I'm talking about is a AMF house in NJ. Presently I have about 300 loyal bowlers that I had ready to follow me there. I'm still really upset about this i still trying to figure out what went wrong, i'm freakin baffled. The original guy they threw out the AMF center i went to him a few months back and offered him a good chunk of change for this location and he declined " freakin idiot" now he is left with nothing. My option is to try to tap into a nationwide house or a brunswick house in the area, we'll see what happens? the bottom line is I got jerked.

the funny thing about it i was going pad the GM or the DM pocket for this location, I should of did it early while i had the chance. If operated correctly this house is capable of grossing $250-300 a year in sales besides that I LOVE the proshop business especially when you make a bowler a little better, It just makes your day.

I've always loved the idea of a free standing pro shop with 2 lanes in it. If you can get a cheap building, you can find the lanes and pinsetters pretty cheap too. This will allow your bowlers to practice with the balls you drill for them to make sure it fits absolutely perfect before they leave, and you can give lessons too.

Just an idea. Maybe it won't fit what you are trying to do, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

MB, that is a dream of mine 2 pairs of lanes with a kegal oil machine with a huge selection of in stock. storm staffer mike rose has a shop like this in upstate ny.
