Alright everyone, heres the problem. I'm gonna be bowling with four guys that I've yet to meet, but I've got their names and averages from last year.. so as team captain, its my decision where to place them in the lineup.

Here's where you can chime in. I'll list the averages in numerical order, and you tell me where you think each average should be placed on the lineup and why you'd put them where they are. 146, 156, 161, 167, 211. Honestly, I don't think there's way too much of a difference in the first four averages to absolutely dictate where the placement should be, but statistically speaking, where would you place these?

-Edit: Its a handicap league. 100% of 220 if I'm not mistaking.

Big average in 5th, second highest in 1st, 3rd highest in 4th, lowest in 3rd positions.

Idealy, you would have a much higher average in the leadoff position but one isn't available so you go with the 2nd best bowler on the team. Nothing worse than a leadoff bowler that sets the pace with a bunch of opens except an anchor bowler that can't handle the pressure of close games and loses you points you needed to win.

4th spot is one where you need someone that can get hot ocassionally and usually doesn't have really stinker games in between.

Usually you hide the lowest average in the middle where the opens don't seem to effect the others as much for some obscure reason.

During highschool bowling, one of my team's strongest areas was our incredible lineup. Our leadoff bowler would usually be our 2nd highest average-- the guy to set the mood of the team. Generally, if our first bowler started off decently well, we all did well. But if he started off throwing the ball in the ditch or missing easy spares for whatever reason, the mood wouldnt be so well and we'd lack just that little extra bit to put us over the top.

We put our lowest average or least consistent bowler to follow up good ol' leadoffer. This is where the importance of the first bowler comes into play. The lowest average bowler is usually psyched out in his own mind, in my opinion. I think relieving him of the pressure of setting the mood will always give better performance. It's kind of like he gets that extra push once he sees that his team mate is already doing well.. a confidence booster. And we all know thats just what a lower average bowler needs. Just mere confidence to give him an extra 20-30 pins each game.

From there, you work on your power game. You've already made up for any damage your lowest bowler has done, so now you have to punch it with these three bowlers, their order usually according to average or strike percentage.

That's how we did things.

It's basically just a club league. Not all the bowlers are out to win the money here. Some bowl for good time, to get out of house, whatever reason. Prize money isn't exactly too high.

On my team we change the lineup every week. It goes like this.
week 1) A
B
C
D

week 2) D
A
B
C

week 3) C
D
A
B
We just move the bowlers down 1 every week all year long.
