Weight loss and bowling
« on: February 26, 2009, 11:01:56 PM »
In the past 4 months, I've dropped 35lbs from 220 to 185.  I was bowling very well prior to the change in my eating habits.  These last few months I've been bowling less than awesome.  The weight loss had an influence on my swing.

The first thing I noticed was a my thumb shrinking.  I ended up reslugging every ball, which helped.  But, I was still "grabbing" it and couldn't figure out why.  I ended up lengthening my span 1/16th and using as little bevel as necessary.  This finally gave me a secure feeling in the ball.  Would the weight loss increase my flexibility?  Could that be why I had the feeling of losing the ball.

As for the rest of my swing, I don't have to clear as much @$$ as I used so that is a good thing....lol  My accuracy seems mucho better.  I'm still getting the feel of it and hopefully it is coming around.  I was able to put together a decent set Wed night.

Has anybody else went thru a significant weight loss/gain?  If so, how did it change your game, feel, etc?

If you lose 10-20lbs properly by eating properly and working out, then you more than likely won't be effected with strength loss. If you over a 100lbs, you are going to have a loss in strength unless you are working out with a trainer. I have had more than a few friends that dropped over 150lbs in a year or so and it took ALL of them almost as long to gain their strength back.

Lifestyle change with reduction of caloric intake to 2,000 to 2,500 calories a day and a switch to eating 5 to 6 times a day instead of the traditional three.  And increase of exercise from nothing (except bowling) to walking on a treadmill 30 minutes a day, which increased to 45 minutes a day to running 3 to 5 miles a day.  Of course this happened gradually but I am pretty much in the best shape of my life right now and feel GREAT!

If you walk every day and write down what you eat you will lose weight.

walk 5 miles a day
decrease your caloric intake by about 500 calories a day.  You will lose at least 1 pound a week.

There is no correlation between weight loss and muscle loss.  FACT

Loss of weight does not always mean an increase in flexibility, visa versa.

If it wasn't for my family wanting to do the biggest loser, I probably would still be the same weight as I was 4 months ago. The only thing I really did was stop snacking in between snacks. For my meals, I only ate just one serving of whatever we were having and that's it. If I have the urge to eat, I would just grab a snack bar. Don't get me wrong, I still eat some sweets from time to time, but I try not to eat anything past 7:00 pm. I try to do some sort of excersize wether it be walking or situps, but nothing that'll wear me out. When I first started my diet, I tried doing some crunches and hurt my back, so needless to say I don't do cruches anymore. But anyway, the weight just started falling off.

What's funny is when my wife had asked me what my weight goal was, and I told her that when I can stand straight up and look down and see my dinkus, that's when I have reached my goal. And just to let you all know, I've found him again. ( "Man I've missed him" )

sorry if this has already been said, i didnt want to read the entire thread.......
over the summer i dropped 30+lbs but i put on some more muscle mass in the process. as a result the ball felt lighter in the swing and my ball speed went up and my timing was god aweful so i just got a lesson with my coach (joe shullek from the dick ritger camp) and just worked on getting my timing and balance and everything back in place. i have been bowling great ever since.

Thanks for all the replies.  I know that during the weight reduction, I did lose some muscle strength.  I didn't not lift at all during this time.  I started back up this week and I felt very weak.  I'm slowly changing my diet to include more protein.

How did I lose the weight?  I've always completed 3 30 minute cardio sessions each week, but I eat terrible.  A friend convinced me to try weight watchers.  I didn't join and go to meetings....lol  I just got a points calculator and stuck to it religiously 6 days a week.  Yes, I still drank beer...you just have to figure it into your points.  Michelob Ultra is only 2 pts!

I also started running alittle more than doing the elliptical/cross trainer.  All that combined allowed me to drop and easily maintain my current weight.  I'm still counting points.
