Pick My Next Piece.....
« on: May 16, 2014, 08:12:55 AM »
Long story short........

A friend of mine (that I bowl fall/winter with) needs someone to bowl a PBAx league w/him and I've agreed due to, basically, his situation.  I'm not really one to bowl more than 3 games per week on a sport pattern (I normally bowl one PBAx league in the summer) which is plenty for me  because I LOVE my "off-season" and well.................that's all there is to that!  I'm very passionate about bowling but when it's 80 and nice out............you see my point.  lolz

However, the pot was made sweeter last night as I was subbing and, while casually conversing w/my teammate and my driller (who bowls in that league), my driller says he will let me pick ANY PIECE in the whole shop if I help my teammate.  Thus, I said OK.

My options are:

A)  Pick the ball
B)  Let him pick it and show up to get it.

I don't want to make a bad choice.  So what I'm doing is floating the idea out on here.  Obv I'm not going to let anonymous posters who've never seen me bowl etc just choose a ball at random, but rather I'd like to see what the consensus is based on my current arsenal and my "stats".

I am:

PAP:  4 7/8" RT 1 1/2" UP
Axis Tilt 8-10 degrees
Avg Speed: 16-17 mph, "enough" revs

My current arsenal:
IQ Tour Pearl (at 2000 w/a strong drill, this ball handles plenty of volume for me)
Diva - (at 2000 w/ VERY light polish, my house shot killer)
Uproar - (3000 w/polish, ball also comes into play as it's stronger than I had anticipated)
MoJave - Old faithful

NOTE: This is more of a fun topic as I just want to gauge the general consensus.

If you were me, what would you get?  Can be any brand, from super-oiler to dart.

NOTE:  I'm NOT brand loyal, so all recommendations welcome.

So far, best piece in my bag is my Darkness. Imagine a IQ Tour only stronger.

Having tested it out last night, I really like my Desert Hook for the burn. I was able to stand on top of the dry and have fun.

That being said, everyone knows my love of Global/AMF.

I'm def open to a Global / AMF piece.......MoJave is getting aged a little, how well does the Desert Hook work on short and very light oil patterns?  I guess I'm asking.....how much dry does it handle?

S30 gets through the heads great, and when it reads the spot, it's not jerky. (Mind you, I threw it for a game last night.)

I'm a big fan of S30, because of how clean it it. Compared to my Link, the move is much smoother. I drilled mine 45x4.5x65 and massive change of direction is NOT in this balls vocab. I was worried about drilling it too weak (Ball only has .026 diff) but was pleasantly surprised. Clean and smooth.

I like the Dessert Hook as I bowl second shift on toasted lanes.  If you are wanting something to try on sport conditions, you may look at the Hammer Arson Low Flare.  This is a pretty versital ball while bing very controllable.  Just my 2 cents.
It's all about synchronized pin dancing!

Just a note. I have a tournament in mind for the Desert Hook where I have to bowl 7 games on Sydney. Just saying.

so your tour pearl is your fresh ball even on sport? with that in mind if your bowling on long i would look into a stronger asymetric ball like a byte or totally defiant. the columbia disorder is the definition of a benchmark. you cant go wrong with the resurgence core. the freeze would be a more angular version of the diva. those are my favorites now.

you could also experiment with a new layout like a motion hole or a RICO or something

I just finished up my PBAx league and I found that using a solid with 1000 or 2000 played really well on most patterns. My suggestion would be a Storm Zero Gravity with a control layout. It is pretty clean through the heads and won't jump off the end of the pattern.

HyRoad, there's a reason Storm has kept it in their lineup so long.  --  JohnP

Yes, believe it or not it handles fresh, heavier volume really well for me.  It was a surprise even for me........

I usually have a lot of roll and don't have much problem getting the ball started up, I run into issues when the volume in the front gets torched, though I did go 659 on Cheetah last night (MILD figjam)

The problem I see is you getting a ball you will only use for the summer and since it will be more of a Sport piece, you won't have any use for it on THS.

If it was me, I would look at like this; do I want a new ball for sport, or do I want a new ball and make it work on sport?

Case 1:  We have similar stats and I am wanting to get the Motiv Covert Revolt.  The only difference is your tilt is a bit less than mine.  Not sure if it would burn up on you too much.

Case 2:  I would get the Venom Shock and have the surface changed to handle the sport conditions.  When the fall gets here, adjust the surface for the THS.

But in the end, I am betting your driller would know what is best for you.  I obviously have a preference for Motiv right now, but everyone is making good stuff.

I did ask him that if he were to pick what he would pick, he did recommend the LT-48, which I think could get use on a THS and sport pattern.

I have seen the Venom Shock whack'em around here......that ball is very smooth but still strong.
