yes i did last year(sometimes still do)...i still bowl on them in some junior bowlers tour tourneys...i honestly hate them now after bowling leagues on them for 4 straight years.  they really tear up my equipment, especially considering that most new alleys are synthetic...all the wood houses are like 30 years old.  i think they should just all change over now...its getting to the point where i dont even wanna use my own stuff on wood lanes...if only they kept them in better condition.

i bowl on wooden lanes.  ive actually gotten to where i like them.  it's nice going to a tournament where everyone thinks that you suck because you only have a 200 average.  but they don't realize that your bowling on wooden lanes and its even nicer when you leave all the 210 average bowlers in the dust cause you average 220 on synthetics .  i love bowling on tough shots, plus they help you in the national tournaments where they put down a sport shot.

jouster i completely agree...if it wasnt for the fact that they eat up my equipment, i would love to bowl on wood lanes all the time.  ive averaged 200+ at the toughest house in my area(which is old wood), and people at the easy synthetic house nearby get beat when i go there for tournaments.  and i agree about the sport shots being a little easier on wood...we put a flat 40' shot down, like the us open, and it was much easier than the time i tried it on synthetic...when the wood lanes get worn, its alot easier to get friction compared to the slick synthetic lanes.

I've always bowled in wooden houses in Massachusetts, they outnumber synthetics probably 6 to 1, and I think they prepare you better for tournaments due to the conditions. You have to be very precise in most wooden houses and read the transitions quickly, make moves accordingly and usually you can't miss your mark by more than a board or two or you'll pay a big penalty.

I don't like the fact that my equipment can get beat up pretty badly on them, but I guess that you have to take the good with the bad...

I get the bonus of bowling in a house with a blend.
the first 20 are some 20 year old overlay and the backs are wood.

wood approaches which are in good shape except for the occasional splinter in the foot.

it's great because the soft synthetics grab your ball. the oil sits in the midlane and carrydowns very little.

clearing the heads is key here. This is my first season there and even though I'm avg 200 I look at the other guys avg 210+ and notice what they are doing.

it seams slow speed with a pearl reactive or shiny solid reactive is the way to go.

I use Particles but I have issue with speed variance. when oil is fresh on the heads, no problem. holds up and I'm ok and can go deeper. but when the heads are playing a little dryer I have to get it some tilt and speed to clear the heads and the midlane has enough oil that Unless I deadly accurate with the speed It will go wide and hang or hit the beak.

I almost have to switch balls to bowl within my comfort zone but I like to grab 1 ball and play it as long as I can. It helps with my adjustments in the long run and forces me to be more consistent. But I know if I grab a reactive and play a small inside swing from 4th arrow to 12 at the most I can probably do better because I would have a lot more room and maybe not have to move more than 2 boards all night. But what fun is that?

next season Me + Animal Untamed = 210+

I bowl at 2 houses that are wood and I prefer them to synthetics.  The alley that is like 2 minutes from my house is Synthetic and I can't stand it they alawys keep it so dry I can only use my sonic X.  I think they do that because it is next to the university Campus and they try to make the college kids happy who just wanna come in and go thumbless with a house ball and see it hook from gutter to gutter.

I like bowling on wood.

Of course, I like bowling on synthetics, too!

This month's BTM rates the different lane surfaces for hardness. A great read!
