Title: Well my season is over
Post by: No Revs00300 on December 02, 2009, 08:36:00 AM
I went in for a diskogram today and as I suspected my bottom three lumbar disk's are completely destroyed. I am off for a three level fusion, and according to my Dr. I might never bowl again. Bowling has been my passion and my life for over twenty years. It's really hard to think about, I even have a couple of three's this season already. I wanted to wish everyone a great year on the lanes and I am praying that I can eventually pick up a ball again.

Sorry to hear this.  Get well soon and see what happens.  Doctors have been wrong before.

ive been there before myself, i had back problems that forced me to sit out over 6 months. it was very difficult, at first i thought i could at least go up to the center and watch my team, but that made it worse for me. as bad as it is being away from it, i hope you get healthy and the surgery is a success. bowling will be there when you get healthy again, good luck to you!

Sorry to hear that, man...and I would definitely get a second opinion on the bowling. Doctors are notoriously conservative (and I would know -- my dad was one), especially about the back.

I've never seen you bowl, so I don't know what your style is, but for many people bowling helps rather than hurts the back. You might have to completely rebuild your game but you're good enough to do it.

Either way, you will be out of commission for a few months, that much is true. But advancements in back surgery have been almost unbelievable over the last decade.

For what it is worth, I blew my left knee apart in 1975... The Dr wanted to amputate. My mother signed a form to allow be it but convinced the Dr to rebuild it and if it still needed to be amputated we would do it later.

After 9 months in a cast from the waist down (over the foot)... the Dr's said, I was lucky that my leg was saved but prepared me saying that I would be unable to walk by 30 and that I would never regain full mobility. 6 Months after the removal of the cast, I had 90 percent mobility...1 year 100 percent. Needless to say, 35 years later I am still bowling 100 percent, still full range of motion and very limited problems.

I think I was lucky. But, I was determined at 15 that it was not going to happen to me. I worked like a mad dog to rehabilitate my leg. I think the Dr's prepare everyone for the worst situation possible and then when things go better everyone is happy. I hardly followed the Dr's advice thats why I think I was lucky. But then I wonder if I had what would have been the outcome.

I wish you all the luck but you dont have to leave the game. You coach, you take your knowledge and share it. Mentor. Your profile speaks to a great bowler... teach what that means.

I will pray for you as well.

Just a thought, and I am not crazy, have you
tried to get your back super strong thru
dead lifting?

Try to get your body super strong, so bowling
is nothing for your back.

Thanks for all the kind words, I am not closing the book on my career, but my Dr. was pretty clear on what he said. I know quite a few people who have had a fusion, but no one with more than two levels fused. I know I will eventually be able to bowl again, but with the loss of mobility I just can't picture it working out to well. Hopefully the procedure will go well and in time I can get back to where I was when healthy. On a lighter note, maybe this will help me take some turn off the ball. God knows I have plenty to spare lol.

Honestly thats part of my problem. Every Dr. I have seen all said I was too strong for my own good. I know after surgery I will have to do some strength training to heal. I guess throwing kegs around for ten years finally caught up to me.

Just out of curiosity (sorry for the threadjack), exactly what the heck did you do?

Jess,

I was playing in a high school basketball game, leading on a fast break. Leaped to do a layup with seconds on the clock in a tight game. I felt a pop in my knee when leaving the ground, I made the basket laying the ball into the basket (as dunking was not allowed). My sholders hit the backboard as I grab my leg before hitting the ground. Apparently I banged my head somewhere (backboard or ground i dont know) and was unconsious. I was revived and complained that my knee was hurt. The coach picked me up under my shoulders and the assistant coach support my legs. My knee buckled backwards and my knee cap was 4 inches to high (into my thigh). I had torn off both tendons from my tibula and fibula.

The reason for the desire to amputate, was that doctor who was going to do the surgery to reconstruct my knee wrapped a softcast to tight over night. Swelling prevented blood flow to my foot and calf muscle. By the time 6 am came for surgury he was convinced my leg from the kneee down was dead. So my mom convinced him to rebuild the knee and see what happens to the foot and calf muscle. So the doctor left a 8" long opening on the side of my leg inside the cast to let any draining happen. Over the next week, I had 4 casts replaced because them became soggy and blood red. I dont actually remember much during that week as I was kept on morphine. However, I do remember one event during a cast change where I was lucid and I asked to see my knee. The nurse held me up behind my shoulders and I looked down and saw the scars on the right side of my but felt something funny on the left side of my leg. I twitched my foot and my calf muscle pop out the side and I fainted. LOL.

As often is the case, the cure is worse than the desease. It was a long 9 months in a hip cast. I showered wearing a plastic bag and a super tight strap to prevent water from leaking into the cast. The itching was unbareable and coat hangers were the solution. Terrible.

Some of you may have heard about the flooding in Fargo,ND this past spring. We just about literally filled the FargoDome with a little over 2 million sandbags.
Anyway, a friend of mine was in there helping out(as many of us did) and had a sandbag hit his bowling hand/wrist at a bad angle. The tendon on the thumb side of his hand ruptured so badly that, while repaired surgically,he can no longer bowl or even write with his right hand.
He's begun bowling left handed with a Black Vibe,a White Dot,a wrist brace, and much determination. While obviously no where near his former averages and ability,he still shows up and bowls to the best of his ability.
You,too, should find a way to bowl without hurting yourself after your surgery and do the best you can..............
Good luck to you and you'll be in my prayers.
