werid things bowlers do.
« on: May 25, 2012, 12:49:59 AM »
Do you have any werid habits or preshot rituals that you use to get your mind right?

Myself, I sing White Snake's "Slow an Easy" I think of the beat and mouth the lyrics as I
am lining up and finding my marks on the lane, even as I take my first steps I am still
thinking slow and easy. It helps my feet stay slow, it relaxs me.

Well I don't do anything out of the ordinary anymore...just the same old boring wipe-ball-off-with-microfiber-towel and step up and bowl pretty much. I did, however, used to bounce up and down several times right before taking the first step in my approach. I really don't know where I got it from, but someone made it apparent that it looked kinda dumb and when I saw myself do it, I immediately stopped. Lol

A lefty on the PBA tour named Steve Cook used to do that bouncing thing. He was quite a large man ( 6'5"-325lbs), and I don't believe anyone ever told him he looked "dumb" doing it.

In the old days, there was a guy named Mats Karlsson on the tour. He used to pick up the ball, get set, then straighten his eyeglasses before every shot. Always figured it was just a nervous habit

I heard this from my senior teammate. He bowled with a guy back in the day who would take few steps back on the approach then go forward...

The weirdest thing I've seen was bowling with this guy who uses a mouth piece.

We had one guy on our men's league that would wipe around the top of his ball three times with his hand then kiss his bowling ball. This was on the approach as he lined up.

It must have worked, he went from a 145 average all the way to 155 that year.

Ha, ha! Didn't you know bowling was a contact sport!!??

Yeah, I too know a lady who bowls and reverses herself! She gets on the approach, pauses, then takes, like two or three steps forward as if to deliver the ball, pauses again, backs up two or three steps and then goes forward again to deliver the ball. Whenever she gets up to bowl. I go walk away and do something else. It's nerve wracking to watch and its gotta mess with people who have never seen her bowl before! (an inverted wind-up)

Older guy I used to watch bowl, would bowl with a stutter step. He would take a step, stop, take a step, stop, take two steps, stop, and then go ahead and follow throught with the rest of his delivery. First time I ever saw this, I just dropped my ball in the return and disgustedly went back to my seat! Once he had taken his first step, I thought he had moved on to deliver the ball. Imagine my surprise to look up and realize he had not yet completed his "Bowling Tango"! (or maybe it was the Cupid Shuffle) :'(
Some days you're the bug....some days you're the windshield...that's bowling!

I slide my slide foot back and forth three times.  I started doing this because I got water on my shoe and stuck bad one time.  I stopped doing it and realized that I for some reason didn't bowl as well.. I started doing it again and it seems to get me set and ready to throw my shot..
Not sure why, but it works..

I get set, but shake and rock my arm to get a feel and rhythm before the first step.  It's a way to not be completely still before I get moving in the approach.  It's kind of similar to what Norm Duke does with rocking the ball in his hand.
I used to have a bounce with my first step but now start a bit more upright so that I don't bounce up and down.

You know now that I think about it, I do slide my left foot up and back once for that same reason...I don't really see that as a weird habit though, maybe a perk. Now if you did something like toss your ball up in the air, do a backflip and catch it every time before your shot, I'd think that would qualify as weird and over the top. LOL

I always wipe out my thumbhole with the tail of my shirt, and then go. Stopped doing it for one shot, and lost it due to sweat. I have really bad handsweat...

I have seen a guy bowl with a baseball helmet, before. Had a sun visor on it, too. It's like PDW meets Jeter.

IN Las Vegas we had i guy that would wipe the ball then throw it up about 5 feet and catch it a few times before bowling. I guess that light ball was all he could handle.

Probably has TMJ and sports doctors have figured out that it can affect concentration and performance in sports.  Mouth piece corrects it.  Performs better.
Long Gone also posts the honest truth which is why i respect him. He posts these things knowing some may not like it.

We have a lefty in our league that does this plus his approach looks like Fred Flintstone.
