Whaddya think?
« on: October 13, 2004, 04:23:20 AM »
As I posted elsewhere I just found out that were bowling on a slight variant of PBA E.  So last night my driller, the resident pro, asked me if I wanted to bowl an upcoming PBA regional that will use E.  I'm thinking about it.  I don't think I'll do it because even though I'm averaging right at 200 now, and can really kill the shot when everything is good with me, I don't think it's worth $250 to go get my rear end handed to be by guys that are averaging 215 on the real version of E.  Would you bowl?  I would do it in a heartbeat if it was a bit cheaper, but I think I can go watch, be just as entertained, and save the money.  (Hoping that $250 falls out of the sky real soon.)

Rags--What type of surface would you bowl on?  Different versions of E work well on wood <ie. older houses> from what I have seen.  Remember it's one of the shortest <35' or a slight variation of that> of the PBA patterns.  Most of the guys that I see score well on this pattern with decent speed and less axis tilt.  Hope you can afford it.

Rags,

Check to see if the Pro/Am is going to be bowled on the tournament pattern.  If it is, bowl in the Pro/Am.  You could probably bowl 2-3 squads for about half of what the tournament proper would cost.  ANd you just might walk away with some cash to boot.

Just an alternative suggestion.

Pin, I don't think they run a pro-am at regional events.  If they do, I like your notion.

In the Midwest region which is not to say that ALL regions do this.   It's usually a 9-pin tap on the house china.

Rags, they do run pro-ams at regionals, but usually it's just a house shot oil pattern.
If you want my 2¢, go for it!!! You know you have very little chance of winning BUT!!! You may surprise yourself and do your self proud. In a way, you can't loose. I would shoot for the experience and let the chips fall where they might. Best of luck if you do.

There are Pro Ams at regionals - I've bowled in them both as a Pro and an Am.  The Pro Am's here in the WTB South Region are on the tournament pattern (granted it's a little easier than the pattern used on Saturday); different regions have different practices, however.  Personally, I like the idea of letting the amateurs bowl on the PBA pattern just for the sake of letting the house hack know that there's more to the patterns than he/she thinks.

It also lets prospective PBA members see what they are getting into before forking over $195-250 for a tournament bid.

I personally would didn't put up the $250 until I had cashed in a regional Pro-Am.  Within a couple months of earning cash, I put myself on the line at a PBA regional.  I finished 22nd and earned a check.  Felt GOOD!

Just had another thought about this.  Do they pay a senior division?  If they do I'd be more inclined to do it.  Then the only person I'd have to beat would probably be Ernie Schlegel - no problem.

Yep Rags.  There is a Senior PBA division.  Depends what part of the country you are in.  You might have seen my reference in your earlier post about Dick Weber's recent win on E in a Midwest Senior PBA regional event.

Rags,  You can check the schedules at www.pba.com  In the left pane there are link to each of the regions.  Look under Regional Tour for the Northwest Region.  I'm hoping for a good day on Saturday, but you get a chuckle , if you check the qualifying scores from East Senior Regional this weekend in York PA on Sat evening or Sun morning.  Just look for my name, it will be there.

Oh yea, I'll be on Senior Pattern C, which is like the regular Pattern C, just a little more forgiving (so they say)

How many games do you roll for qualifying, 8?  $250 for 8 is kind of expensive for a learning experience.  If it were more games I might give it a shot.  But, if it's your only chance to try it, you might kick yourself if you pass it up.

I hate to be the one to tell you,but you are to old to try bowling on a hard pattern. If you averaged 230 on a ths i would say have at it.The only thing you are going to do is donate your money to a young guy who rips the cover off the ball.

If Rags chooses to bowl in a Sr. PBA regional.  He won't be bowling against anybody younger than 50.  He may donate but on E on the gutter if his game is sharp along with his spare game...he'll do fine I predict.  It's how his roll and equipment match up to the surface.  E is one the easier PBA patterns that is put out.

Graybeard, I sort of think you're right.  There are however a couple of mitigating things going right now.  On the E that were bowling league on the local pro (easily capable of 230+ on a ths) isn't beating me by much; the gutter is my A game; I'll probably kick myself if I don't do it; and (most importantly) the guy who owes me 9 grand may actually pay between now and then so I'll have some unexpected bucks to fool around with.  Also the fact that there will be a payout for srs. helps (though they probably won't pay more than 3 or 4 slots).

Rags all I can add is that sometimes the money issue should be thrown out the window. Brian Green learned this summer what  had learned awhile back by bowling in the Classic Shootouts (on PBA patterns) here. Many top keglers, the likes of Angelo, Baker, Ciccone, Liz Johnson, etc., will always come to the top, and hacks like Brian and myself are lucky to make the cut. But it is the experience, the chance to comptete against them, and learn from being on the lanes with them that makes it all worthwhile!

I can only say that if my game was in shape right now I would be looking to compete at Reccio's in the regional there in November.

Good luck if you decide to go...and let us know.
