I'm a beginner, need a ball recommendation
« on: January 08, 2005, 05:21:21 AM »
All this is from a left-handed perspective. arrows from the left, not sure if thats how you count them though!

Right now I'm using a very hard Brunswick Zone ball. It suprisingly hooks more than usual though (I think). I can throw it straight between the 1st and 2nd arrows and hit the pocket, I can also stand to the far right and go over the 3rd arrow to hit the pocket when I don't use my thumb. It seems to break at a medium distance and come back to the right at a medium speed. This throw uses alot of spin though and doesn't hit very hard at all. Every once in a while I'll get some good hits, but usually the pins just fall over limply (talking about strikes of course)

I'm looking to buy a ball that can give me more speed in my throw while maintaining the hook I have on a thumbless throw. Something that breaks more sharply and gives a satisfying crunch when it hits too.

I've been looking at the Brunswick BVP Goliath so far mainly because its extremely cheap.

I bowl on medium or high oiled lanes. Again, being a beginner I don't know which. All I know is I get good oil streaks on my ball when it returns

Lastly, being a beginner looks matter alot I want to differentiate my ball from everyone elses and get comments on the color scheme. Glossy or dull finish doesn't matter though since I read that affects your throw.

Because they are low end balls. They do not have very technical weight blocks, or very strong covers. I got one NIB off of buddiesproshop.com for 50, and everything is cheap on ebay.

hmm On buddies website you have a choice of top weight and pin position. What do they mean?

If color is the only difference then I'm going to fret away Besides, I'm only 24 with a wife and a house.. no money for a dozen balls hehe.

I concur with going with a Power Groove.  Bought one for my wife who just started bowling and it's a surprisingly very good ball.  Thinking of getting one for myself to use on drier conditions.

Thank you everyone! This has been a very learning experience for me and I appreciate your time and effort to answer all my questions! When I'm ready I'll purchase a Power Groove Reactive and let you know how I like it, that could be a while from now though hehe.
