What all is available with a urethane cover now?
« on: January 19, 2013, 04:56:49 AM »
What are all the options that are out there in the urethane market now? I brought my storm natural out last night for the first time in awhile and had a great look with it at my house shooting 705 with a 289 game (damn 6 pin).

So what all is out there now urethane wise? The Natural Pearl and the Blue Hammer? Am I missing one?

Also what would be a good ball that would sit just above the urethane if it is not quite enough to get back to the pocket?  I love the smooth look of the urethane and would like to keep a similar roll but a few boards stronger for when the urethane just cant make the turn.

Me bowling. I am working on going much straighter and playing more on the outside of the lane. I have found this is where to score in this house and I have nothing but a urethane ball that will allow me to get that far out.

Brunswick Karma Urethane
Columbia Classic U2

Although discontinued, Roto Grip Grenade is available on ebay in 15 and 16 all the time with good specs.

Recent past:

Visionary Ogre Urethane
Lane 1 Liberator
AMF Hype (black Hype)

Grenade seems to be the cheapest as well.

Brunswick Karma Urethane, Columbia Classic U2.

Several other companies have had them recently, but most hardly sold and have been discontinued. The market is just too tiny for most companies to continue to market them.

Balls, like the Brunswick Slingshot, and Roto-Grip Shout, are barely above the level of most urethanes. Pearl versions of these super mild cored balls, like the Ascent Pearl and Scream and Tropical Breeze have resin-like, stronger backends unless you're speed dominant. (Speed dominant bowlers see much less backend form these pearls than bowlers who are speed and rev matched.) So they're not really 1 step, but 2 steps above urethanes in ball reaction.

I am definitely not speed dominant. I just picked up a track 505 c and drilled it negative and I thought that ball would be money for me in the house. It still picks up way to early for me and has quite a bit of back end pop for the drilling we put on it.

A ball that may help you more than Urethane might be a Green/Blue Centaur with some surface taken off. Mine is awesome for the dirt and up the ditch around 2000 abralon....problem is they have been discontinued forever from Visionary. If you throw 16, they do have some 16s laying around....

Ball has a very mild cover and a super low diff of .015......

The BG Centaur is and has been, for me, the most truly awesome ball (not misusing this word) I have used in 45 years of bowling. I have had it in 16 lb. and now have it in 14 lb. (for injuries) and in 15 lb., usually 2 in each weight class.

I have used it 2000 grit matte, 4000 grit matte, 2000 grit polished and 4000 grit polished, depending on the oil pattern. Even used it at Nationals playing 5th arrow with the ball at 2000 grit dull. Unless you're extremely speed dominant, this ball is gold on dry to light to medium light oil pattern. With enough revs, it'll handle medium oil.

One of the dumbest moves by VBP all-time.  Instead of manufacturers worrying about bringing out the next huge hook monster....IMO they need to bring out balls like the B/G Centaur which can be used by the majority of players on house type patterns because let's face it most proprietors don't put out enough volume either in length or side to side blend.  Balls like the B/G are gold on these house patterns unless you are a no hander.

I agree with charlest best all-time lower volume ball.  I have gotten rid of all my VBP equipment but saved a B/G for good reason.

EBONITE HAS THE NITRO IN URETHANE AND JUST A STEP ABOVE IT IS THE CRUSH/R. BOTH ARE SOLD AT PLACES LIKE DUNHAM SPORTS AND ARE ACTUALLY DECENT BALLS FOR LOW END PIECES...

Wait until you see the arson low flare
will be out in a few weeks

needs to be drilled properly, so the blueprint software is helpful on this one
the pros raved about it at WSOB on the dry

from the spec sheet:

- Color: Blue/Teal/Red All colors do vary somewhat from the picture shown.
- Reaction: Smooth Hook
- Coverstock: Max-Control Pear
- Core Type: Modified Arson Core
- Factory Finish: 500 Abralon®/Polish
- Radius of Gyration (RG): 2.48**
- Differential (Diff): .020**
- ** RG and Diff are based off of 15 lb. balls
- Hook Potential: Mid
- Length: Mid
- Recommended Lane Condition: Medium Oil

Description: When the lanes are on fire because they are so dry, now you have a ball to turn to, the Hammer Arson Low-Flare. This Hammer Arson Low-Flare is made to carry down the lane even on the driest conditions. This will help your ball stop hooking too early on drier bowling centers.

Dave,

I don't trust an Ebo brand cover. Even with a LOW flar core as the ball does have, a strong cover can negate some of that low flare advantage. Look at the Cobra SE AMF came out with earlier this year...low diff as well but the cover is too aggressive.

The other thing I worry about is the Arson Low Flare looks to be pearl according to the Hammer website...to me that SCREAMS over under unless you have a ton of hand. I smell lots of skid if it sniffs oil because of the pearl, and as soon as it hits any dirt with all of the saved energy from the pearl skid its going to flip more than you want even with the low diff...

Just my opinion...

CharlesT and Scott....the Centaur is an amazing piece and one I wish VBP would put back into production. Cover was responsive to cover changes as alluded to, could be used across a wide array of conditions, and seems to just do what you need it to game after game and year after year...

I understand how you feel, but in this case, they may have something.
I say that because I have that exact same cover on a Backlash Blue/Silver, in both 15 lb. and 14 lb. I can guarantee that that coverstock is so even reacting, I almost hate it. I drilled it both strong (pin over ring finger) and super mild (Pin over Middle finger) and I've tried several different surfaces on each drilling. It been nothing but arc, arc, arc. Heck even being rev dominant, I can hardly get any backend on the darned thing. With the low RG on the Arson Low Flare, it may have even less backend.

I forgot about this brand new ball, when talking about current balls that would be just slightly stronger than urethane balls.

Cool Dave. Let me know how it rolls for you.

Charles...interesting. I just don't trust Ebo covers (mostly to last more than 50 games). Last Ebo brand ball I had was the original Hawg..died after 30 games.
