Bad habit.
« on: March 08, 2006, 02:32:21 AM »
Or coincidence?  Over the last 3 weeks I'm noticing something in my league bowling.  I'll start well, carrying everthing that I deserve, but somewhere in game two I'll start losing carry - but only on one lane.  I'm wondering if, subconsciously, I'm doing something slightly different on one lane.  I'll start pinging 10 pins, or not carrying the 7 on a lighter hit; maybe the odd 9 pin.  Anyone else have this problem?  Or any ideas as to why I'm doing this?

In one house, I bowl at on Wed. night a 40 lane center in town.  The left lane always hooks 2 baords more has less carry down from previous shift.  Always the left vs. the right.  Not sure if it's the lane conditoning machine, the climate in the building, the amount of open play they put before us and another 4 man league in front of us or what.

I always play the right lane further outside for better carry and more hook going around the carry down and the left lane further insideas it's shorter conditioned and less carry down.

Maybe something like those issues are working against you Rags!

Is it always the right lane or left lane?

If so then could the ball return start coming into play?

I know in my late shifts I tend to loose the right hand lane as I get deeper on the approach. The ball return effects my approach just a little.

IMO, sounds like you might not be lined up correctly on one lane from the start.  You might not be getting a good mid lane reaction as a result.  Try moving 2:1 or 4:2 to the left if your a righty and see what happens.

Pinbuster, it varies.  And it's odd.  For example last night lane 20, which usually hooks about 2 boards more than 19, was hooking about 2 boards less.  Had both sides nailed the first game, then started w/ the 10 pins in game 2.  Moved 2 right with feet (1 at arrows) on 20, still pinged 10 pins.  Finally got some carry back (2 strikes in game 3) by slowing down on 20.

hchiava1, when I try parallel moves to the left it doesn't matter, other than instead of pinging 10's, I'll start leaving 7's.

Likely it is due to topology differences between the lanes when oil pushes down the lane or mid lanes start to go. The clue to me is that when the back ends are fresh you dont have the issue. Having participated in building centers, resurfacing lanes, being a mechanic and bowling I have seen this issue before. It is unlikely that you would only do something on one specific lane and only after a game. Look for other answers.

(sorry to not get back to this sooner)
Brenton, good observation and likely has some truth to it.  Hadn't thought of that.

Chili, synthetics and usually on my 2d beer in the middle of game 2 (I might have 3 in a night, usually not.)

Pin-chaser, these are 2 year old Pro-Anvils, but yes, topography probably has at least someting to do with it (doesn't it always?).

Thanks to all for your thoughts.

I've actually started approaching the start of the set by using two different balls, with only a slight difference in lines.  I finally started doing that after fighting a pair for most of a game trying to find something that works.  It is also a house that is noted for each lane playing slightly different...

Considering that the issue has occurred on different lanes, and also the spares are mixing up, to be honest I'd put the problem on your mental game.

What Im thinking is say week one you lost some carry.  You don't think much of it, thats bowling. You just try to keep in mind what adjustments you made and try the usual solutions.  But when it began happening in week two, you recalled week one's issues and began trying to adjust to them.  Then by week three you see the same evidence and begin trying to make pre-emptive adjustments the second you leave 2 ten pins.

Thats just another thought angle I've gone through myself at times, maybe it applies here.  It might also be an issue with stamina....but I won't go there

Last night I had a good look and carry the first two games.

The last game I couldn’t carry either lane. My look was still good so I stayed with the same ball to start the game and left 3-10 pins, a 7 pin and an 8 pin. So I changed balls and struck then left 2 more 10 pins, a 7 pin, 4 pin and a 9 pin.

Clean for a 191.
