Ball for my wife
« on: June 16, 2014, 11:12:07 AM »
My wife has bowled off and on for about ten years but she has decided to get more serious about it this year and we are bowling 2 leagues together. She was bowling a conventional gripped 12 lbs. plastic and she changed to a finger tip grip this year and I bought her a 13 lbs. Storm Tropical heat ball. Her footwork and swing are good but she has really struggled developing a consistent release. The manager of our bowling center told he thought the ball was too heavy for her and brought out a 11lbs Storm Fringe out that was close to her hand size and boom perfect throw after perfect throw.

So now she wants an 11lbs. ball I looked at storms website they don't do 11lbs. anymore lowest on their is 12lbs. I prefer storm/roto equipment as I am more familiar with them but wanted to see what you guys might suggest. She throws about 11.5-12 mph. I don't know her pap or revs yet.

I know its hard to suggest with out seeing her bowl just wanted some ideas before I go talk to my proshop guy.

You are going to have to stay on the low end.  Tropical Heat is about the best you are going to do unless she can throw 12lbs (plug her plastic ball and see is she can handle that ball finger tip).  May have more choices by going to 12.  But if all she can handle is 11, then low end of any company is all you can do.

At 11 lbs you'll get a generic core.  I like the Ebonite Cyclone, have sold quite a few with no negative comments.  --  JohnP

Storm does make balls in less than 12 lbs. Just at the lower end lines. For example you can get the Lights Out/Punch Out/Wipe Out line as low as 10 lbs even though they don't show it on Storm's website. Check on Bowlingball.com. They also have left over 11 lbs Freak'n Frantic on there which is pretty much the same as the Fringe if your wife liked that.

Currently in the bag: Lock, Critical Theory, Asylum, IQTP Frantic, Buffalo Bills Spare

  • I have a name, therefore no preferred pronouns.

Thanks Mswitz88 I thought they weren't available since they were not listed on the website another tropical or maybe a lights out was what I hoped for.

I've been told that Storm uses a generic version of their Diesel core for their light weight balls.  --  JohnP

There was a similar thread recently where it was brought up that Motiv does not change their cores for lower weights.  If they can't get a desirable RG with a core at a lower weight then they just don't make it in a lower weight.  That being said, they have their Ascent Pearl and Ascent Apex in 10+ pounds.  Almost all the other balls start at 12+ save for the Tank and Cruel Intent which are 14+.  So it's still true you need a lower spec ball at those lower weights but somebody does have a ball with a non-generic core.
