to wipe or not?

It has been in my pre-shot to wipe the ball but I've seen where people don't. Everything I've read tells you to, so why other than personal choice would there be any reason to not wipe the ball? Was woundering if coverstock has anything to do with it as well.

I wipe the ball if it's oily on the lanes and looking for a lot of hook but if they're dry i let the oil soak in on my track to get my ball down the lane.

If they're dry, there's no oil to soak in. If you let the oil soak in, it's NOT a temporary situation where the oil evaporates afterwards, just because you want it to. letting oil soak in is not a good thing. Letting the oil stay onthe surface FOR ANY REASON is not  a good thing, because you cannot predict the ball's behavior at all whenthere's oil on the surface. It's just common sense.

Wipe the oil off after every shot; it's a good and safe habit to get into.

Think about it, when you're wiping.....the oil isn't really coming up, you're just smearing.  I leave it be.  I'll agree it's a force of habig for most bowlers.  For instance, I'll swipe my foot on the approach a few times to make sure I get a good feel and nothing is on my sole.  Even when there's no problem with the approaches I still do it.  Force of habit.

with the proper towel....it shouldn't smear,....that much.......

I personally do wipe the off before every shot, it's my pre-shot routine and it's a habit.....however...you see a BUNCH of pros who don't ......

I wipe the ball before every shot - at least the strike shot. It is part of my routine and helps me to concentrate. I do it also to check the track flare on the ball to see how much oil is (left) on the lane, and to keep my hands away from conditioner when I pick the ball up or hold it at the approach.

Although... I should wipe the ball AFTER each shot, since then there will be most of the conditioner onn the surface. When I am due to do the next shot, much of the oil has already been soaked up.
