Title: What Ball Metrics Are Important To You?

For example, when looking at a spec sheet, what numbers are important?

RG?
Diff?
Length (scale of 1-10 or 1-20 or 1-100?)
Backend (scale of 1-10 or 1-20 or 1-100?)
Core densities
Lane conditions
Bowler type recommendations (best for stroker/cranker/etc)
Coverstock hardness


What else?  What is important?  What helps you decide to buy the ball or not?

As far as numbers go RG to me is one to the most important numbers. This gives me a feel for length and the general shape of the shot for that ball.

I then look at coverstock type. Heavy load particle, light load particle, resin, and whether they are pearlized or not.

And finally manufacture, manufactures do have tendencies for the hook shape of their balls, and I will pick the one that fits the shot shape I’m looking for. Skid/Flip I’ll look at Columbia, Track, Storm. ARC I’m looking at Brunswick or Ebonite.

I look at the cover first.  I wait for feedback from people who actually own it to make sure it's not dramatically different than expected.  I do look at RG.  I don't seen to match up with anything low or extremely high.  I pay attention to the diff, but again like average numbers.  Too little gives me over/under, too much doesn't give me a good read of the lanes.  I'll look at the companies length/backend numbers, but take them with a grain of salt.  Coverstock hardness means nothing today.  I don't believe you can make a ball specifically designed for an individual style.  I look at the core, but admittedly don't know what shapes/densities would be good for me.

A couple of things from above:

Coverstock hardness, I think is very important!
72 - 75 and solid is a lot different from 77 - 78 in pearl!

On core shape I think how thick the belly of the core is, is extremely important in relation to break point shape!

Scales for length and flare are important to me.  In that very often if I've seen one ball and it is in box(I ask) I can often then have an idea how a numeric score relates to the ball that I HAVE seen and usually see about what the ball compainies talk about.

generically speakling


designed hook shape. why buy a arcing ball and try to make it snap?

strentgh of MB: influence the reaction shape greatly

design for oil condition. you can't take a V2 dry and hook on heavy oil

Cover stock not just type but versitility and longevity.

Company loyalty If I have a choice between 2 balls. I'll pick the company that has the best customer service
