Need New Ball Recommendations
« on: August 18, 2012, 06:29:49 PM »
Getting ready to start a fall league and definitely want/need new equipment.  My current benchmark ball is a Copperhead (slightly polished) and it's well used.  Second and third ball out of the bag options are a Reign of Fire (also slightly polished) and a very old original Cell.  All are 15 pounds.  No tournaments planned, looking for something(s) to be used on THS for league.  Typically a 38ft shot with medium oil at best.  Lane conditions vary from week to week depending on how much traffic has been on the lanes before we get there.  I'm a 190 average stroker, ball speed in the 13-14 mph range with 275 to 300 revs. I like to play pretty direct if possible up and around the ten board.  Never happy when I have to move too far left and swing it.  New balls on the market that have caught my eye are:  Ebonite Endure, Brunswick Maxxed-Out, Roto Grip Berserk, and Columbia Violent Eruption.  Have never liked pearls but maybe a hybrid is a good compromise. Also thinking about dropping to 14 pounds for a little more control and consistency of release (I'm not getting any younger). Any and all input is most appreciated.

Probably sound like a broken record, but go with the Violent Eruption or the 503T, as there are no better balls on the market right now.

With your ball speed that low, I suggest these 2 balls.  The first is a Freeze Solid with a surface of 4000 abralon with no polish.  The Freezes still have some strength in their covers for most THS conditions as their coverstock was the high end cover of about 5+ years ago.  Most THS conditions havent changed that much in 5 years.  Once that ball gets to be a little too much, step down to something like a Slingshot.

Even though the balls mentioned (Endure, Violent Eruption, and others) are excellent balls, I would steer you away from them with that low ball speed.  Those other balls mentioned may force you to stand farther inside and play a part of the lane you dont like.  From what I have seen from others with slower balls speeds, the Freezes work really well.

Appreciate the recommendations -- very helpful to this point.  Don't know what to tell you about my ball speed.  The 13-14 mph is consistent at my home lanes, however when I do venture to a different house I'm always in the 15-16+ mph range.  Nobody at my home house (in league) is more than 16-17 mph and there are some pretty strong crankers in the group. I'd say that I'm about average, to slightly above average in speed compared to the rest of the bowlers in my league.  Lots of guys only in the 11-12 mph range.

I would look at the Roto Grip --  RISING STAR  - this has been my go to ball most of the time and the hit is just unbelievable -- great ball for the money --- the BERSERK will a stronger hybrid ( I have one ordered), but defiantly check out the Rising Star!

I have similar ball speed, and slightly higher revs,(325-350) and for regular house shots, I use 2 Ebonite Cyclones. (1 pin down at 3000 grit, and 1 pin up at box finish)I have had a great success with this combination.I think the Cyclone is the best ball on the market at it's price point.

Are you looking for something to use at both houses or just the home house mainly?  The amount of difference in speed is either because you are manipulating the ball due to conditions or the oil at the other house is a bit more than your home house.  More skid equals more ball speed down lane.  More friction equals more hook which also equals to the ball speed slowing down.  So the main question, is my first one.  Want something to use at both houses or just the home house mainly?

I'm really concentrating on getting something new just for THS during league at my primary house.  When I go other places, it's strictly social, fun and/or practice.  I also agree that speed variation may be a function of oil.  My main house is extremely active (lots of family/open bowling with house balls) which tends to give me a drier shot than I would like. I think Rising Star and Cyclone are both good suggestions and really cost effective. Don't want to buy a 'hook-monster' which is really not my game, nor something I want to try and control.  Would much prefer some length to help me get through light oiled heads and then a nice continuous backend arc.  Jumpy/angular stuff drives me crazy!

I wonder if his home house has the sensors mounted very close to the pins while some of the other places have them near the arrows.  16 at the arrows and 14 at the deck would match up pretty good with 275-300 rpm.  A few years back Kegel measured me at 17-17.5 at the heads.  My sport shot league house usually measures me at 14.5-15.

I believe you will like the Rising Star better than the Cyclone --- the R/S to me is more of a strong arching ball, the Cyclone will be more flippy in the back end. I would check out all the reviews on both balls to get more feedback, so you can justify your pick.

Anybody have "good" or 'bad" to say about a "Frantic"?  A couple of guys in league are using a 2 ball combo ("Manic" and "Frantic") and seem to be having good success.

the frantic is a very versatile ball. mine is rather strong. easy to use on multiple shot. i even use mine on long sport patterns. But if you are going with storm and havent really had experience with it. i would recommend the victory road pearl. It is my go to ball.

Have had Storm product in the past, some very good, some not so good.  My Special Agent (about 10 years ago) was my go to ball -- I have a Reign of Fire which is okay but seems to labor a bit trying to rev-up.  Also have a Tropical Heat (solid) but it didn't work for me -- think I took some bad advice on the drilling lay-out.  Definitely open to one of Storm's "Road" models, but which one?
