TV format
« on: February 17, 2013, 03:44:25 PM »
I've been watching bowling on TV since forever but this team format is the worst. If they want to do the team thing, bowl a complete game like league play. Have match points as well as team points. This format is like a celebrity charity event or something. It's unwatchable IMO.

I'd like to see a format similar to the old Championship Bowling show.  First have a qualifying tournament with the top 8 bowlers making the cut.  The first TV show could be highlights of this tournament.  Then bracket the top 8 based on total pins in the qualifier.  Then seven TV shows from the bracket with each show being a three game match, total pins.  Three games would make a very interesting one hour show.  These matches could be taped and run on Saturdays with the regular tournaments on Sundays.  --  JohnP

It's so phony it stinks! "Celebrity" team owners that are mostly washed-up football players? How deparate can you get? Does the PBA really think the normal bowler believes they are sincere? Give me real bowlers who actually interested in improving the sport and the TV experience not a bunch of phonies. It's an insult to our intelligence and I have "tuned out".

That's too bad.  If you would have watched you would have heard Pete Weber and Scott Norton refute everything you just said.  I wonder what Loeschetter would have said about letting team mates down?  Get a clue, buddy.

Of course they don't "own" the teams, you seem to be the only person on earth actually hyping that.

But, if the ratings show the public likes this, you just might see a total restructuring of the PBA as we know it with actual franchise owners bidding for teams and putting bowlers on contract to bowl for their team as the owners share the television money they can get, just like the other pro leagues.  If the money was there to pay your franchise player $60K and others on your roster from $50K-$30K, they just might take it instead of slogging it out on tour for $10K first place money.  They would be free to bowl in the regionals in the "off season" and the "old" Tour would be gone. Maybe televise the four or five "Majors" but the team league would be the norm.

The above is the most likely form the "PBA" will survive.

I don't know how old you are, but they had the team format with team sponsors  back in the '50,s and it proved to be too expensive.  I only bring up the "team owners" because it is so obviously phony.    By the way, who are you to"educate the ignorant one BR reader at a time"??

Look up your history.  The National Bowling League failed because they had no television contract.

BTW, looks like I'm educating you, doesn't it.

The reason they have this format is simply because the fan base of bowlers alone to watch the shows isn't enough. Many have stopped watching because of the lame excuses for bowling formats the PBA has tried in an attempt to get more viewers.

Many bowlers aren't bowling anymore, many that are could care less about watching it on television. So now they have to try and find some gimmick to grow the viewer base.

Getting anyone, not in bowling, on the telecast in hopes of other fans watching the show is a ratings increase more then likely. If T.O. or or anyone makes a tweet about watching them this coming Sunday on ESPN and anyone actually does, then they have increased their market. Yes most will only watch for a few minutes before changing the channel, but when your desperate what do you expect.

I hate watching the bakers format, hate bowling it, but it is the only way you will see half of these guys on television anymore. Also keep in mind that since the NATIONAL PBA TOUR isn't actually touring the United States, it is big clue how bad a condition the tour is in.

A tour that doesn't tour is not going anywhere.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.
