What causes lanes to make the ball double bounce
« on: July 12, 2009, 02:46:27 PM »
I'm sure it's possible to make the ball double bounce at any house if you drop the hell out of it hard it have some other strange release that makes it possible however, there is an old center that is very hard I like to sometimes bowl at on weekends. A dollar something a game on a Saturday afternoon and usually not many people at this 24 lane house. Old, strange lanes. Looks like light wood with synthetic overlay or could be wrong. Approaches are wood and around the 40 board slides big time.

The heads on the lanes are seriously jacked. Half my balls and most others I see bowl cause the ball to double bounce. Sometimes you don't even notice it unless you get it on film which I have and sometimes you can see it and hear it.When it does this, causes the ball to turn earlier on a very light to dry lane house. Any ideas what causes lanes to do this?

I'm not sure, but there is a center around here that has AMF HPLs of some sort I believe.  If you throw the ball a certain way, you can hear the double dribble.  There's a kid/guy that doesn't bend his knees really and when he throws the ball he double dribbles it at this center every time.  I've done  it a few times and that's usually an indication of poor execution, but it's very annoying when this person does it with no signs of it bothering him.

i bowl once a week on new amf synthetic lanes and am short, fat & lacking in the knee bend area. if i am not careful my ball does double bounce. this is the only house to do this in. my team mates (jokingly i think ) say they can tell if i will strike without looking by just counting the bounces.

There are houses out there where something happens to the overlay, causing it to "ripple". Thinking about one house in particular, lanes 1 and 2 were nicknamed "the ramp" because of the ripple about 5 feet from the foul lane. The normal sound of the ball hitting the floor could be heard and then a second thump as the ball went over the ramp. Experiments with a ball placed on the approach and pushed confirmed it, since it was difficult to distinguish from the double-thump caused by a too-early release.

Not to hi-jack , but a too-early release can cause that as well? Hmmmm. I bounce the ball sometimes and sometimes the ball sounds like a shotgun when it hits the lanes.Could this be from a too-early release.I know I can't get that low to the line because of bad knees and I am 6'5.Any suggestions? Sorry again about the half bump!!-------------------

Snowman - not really a hijack, it's to the point. Yes, if you release the ball in the downswing, like a plane going nose-first into the runway, it can cause the ball to double bounce. Another cause can be a bowler getting low enough so that the ball touches the lane at the bottom of the swing (1 thump) and then release the ball slightly upward and out onto the lane (2nd thump).

The house I bowl at on wednesday nights does this double bounce as well. The bounce is new to the house though. AMF Synthetics with new heads installed about 3 years ago this month. My dad has this problem extensively, when the lanes were wood he only had this issue on occasion which was usually a result of bad timing for him. I have this problem once in awhile my self. For me its a combination of bad release or timing to early.
