Title: What company do you use to ship balls?
Post by: BigBZ on May 24, 2004, 04:04:09 AM
Fellas-I'm asking this because it has been quite expensive for people shipping balls to me since I'm out here in OR.(man, it seems like most of the US's bowling pop. is in MN. WI. or MI. What's up with that?!)

I just recently returned a ball to Storm and assumed that UPS would be cheaper than USPS Parcel Post because of the weight.(I normally use USPS Priority for my golf clubs because it's about the same $ as UPS, but the people get the clubs in about 1/2 the time it takes UPS) I was surprised to find out that there was less than $2 difference between the two.....maybe not even that much by the time I had to pay the additional couple of bucks that "Postal Connections" tacks on for a UPS drop/pick-up site.

Is Fed-EX any cheaper than UPS or USPS? I also had a fellow that sent a ball to me using Airbourne(sp?)Express, which seemed to take about the same time as UPS(around 6-7 business days)but only cost less than $11 from MI to OR.(but I think that was a discount rate since his wife works at Costco and shipped it out from there?) Thanx Brian

FedEx is occasionally cheaper than UPS, and most common carriers are close in price.  Unless you are truly in the sticks, you should be able to prepare a ground shipping label online and schedule a UPS pickup from your residence or workplace.

I would expect most from Oregon to Utah would be even more closely related in pricing than what you see shipping across the country.

US Postal Service is the least desirable of all shipping options when it comes to shipping bowling equipment.  The horror stories abound, and you could read many of them except for the idiotic changes to the search feature that took place a few weeks ago...

After experience with all 3 shipping companies.

Do not ship USPS, there is a chance the package will be late or get lost.
FedEx is ok, but their service isnt as good as UPS.
UPS to me is by far the best. You might pay a few bucks extra, but its worth it.

USPS stinks, if you want the ball to arrive late, broke or damaged go ahead use em.

Fedex is okay but UPS is soooo much better.  Yeah, it costs a dollar or so more but it arrives quicker.  I have never once had a problem with UPS.

Hey BigB,

My fellow BR members here also helped guide me in the right direction before regarding this subject.

1) DO NOT USE USPS...worst one, highest cost

2) Fed-EX is okay...maybe a dollar cheaper here/there($100 free ins? too) can someone confirm?

3) UPS has been the most reliable with tracking info and it covers up to $100 at no charge.

For us, in Oregon, Fed Ex ground has been running about 2/3 to 1/2 of the UPS rate for a bowling ball. You can save even more if you have it delivered to a work address instead of a residence.

I shipped 4 balls from Portland, OR to Las Vegas last year. It cost me less than $20, they got there on time, and with no hassles.

mumzie-thanks for the info, really appreciate it!!! That's an unbelievable rate for 4 balls shipped! Can I drop the balls off directly at a Fed-EX location, or do I have to use a business for them to come pick them up.(like UPS)

Gotta go along with everybody else...DO NOT USE U.S. POST OFFICE (USPS).  It is just a major risk to use them as you do not know if the ball will even arrive.  TOTAL joke!!!
