Yet another "Which Ball" thread.
« on: October 18, 2008, 08:40:56 AM »

I'll start with the basic info.

My ball:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQBDQVHR5uc  14 pound Cherry Vibe

And my speed/revs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGzcP20pJSk  Might have to full screen that to see the tape line I have on it that runs from the center of the fingers to the thumb hole.

This has been a great setup for me on medium/dry lanes that I usually see on my second shift league.  Today I went in and got a freshly oiled lane though.  I could NOT get the ball to move.  I lowered my speed down to hardly anything.  I even went thumbless and cranked up the revs and it would hardly move over for me.  Pretty much felt like I was throwing a house ball.  Ok  that's a bit of an exaggeration but it was pretty bad.  I know the ball has more in it but with my style of lower revs it just doesn't work on fresh oil for me.

So what I'm looking for is suggestions on something in the 14 pounders that is a bit more aggressive for my style.

Another thing to consider is that I have been a thumbless bowler for the last 15 years or so.  Was casual at only 6-10 games a year.  Recently I got in to a league and I am really getting in to going out 2-4 times a week.  About 2 weeks ago I decided to teach myself how to use the thumb so I am learning the game all over again, which explains the low revs I think.  But I think I am settled on the speeds that I am comfortable and consistent with.

I'm open to whatever will help my game.  To be honest, I picked the Vibe because it was the best looking ball for the price.  heh  I am seriously new to the real sport side of bowling and in the past month or so I have stuffed as much information as I can find in to my brain.

you could try a Banger Hole Pounder Solid. Works great for me on heavy oil.

It seems like you'd benefit from a Solid meant for medium oil, and honestly there's a world of choices for that.  Your revs aren't that low.  Just low enough to need a stronger ball on the conditions you're talking about.  You probably have just a tad less than me.  I personally think you can't go wrong with a Rival or Raw Hammer Anger.  Either of those would be my suggestion.

I would suggest the Noize or Momentum Swing from Columbia.  The Noize has the same cover as the Resurgence but with a weaker core and the Momentum Swing is high performance just gets through the front part of the lane better than the Resurgence.  If you want to stay with Hammer, The Sauce is a good possibility.  One of the strongest Hammer balls to date.  Give those 3 balls a look.

Before you go out and buy a different ball try throwing that Vibe from the corner on oily lanes. Where you threw the Vibe on the video was right in the heart of the oil. Hard to make a ball hook there. You need to bounce it off the dryer boards to get it to come back. If you do decide to get a new ball, let us know the area you live in and you might be able to get some recommendations about a knowledgeable pro shop in your area. Be nice if the guy could see you throw the ball, maybe even give you some tips. Don't be in a hurry to buy a ball and wind up with something you can only use once in awhile. That's my opinion.

Moon57, that wasn't the typical shot I like to throw.  I am usually way on the outside playing the dry area.  I like to set it down at about 10 and come to 5 or so at mid lane.  If I play in the middle like in the video I tend to spray it all over the place, with playing the edge the gutter scares me in to being accurate.  heh  Sounds strange but it works for me.

Editing to add that I live in Rapid City, S.D.  Only 2 houses here to go to and the one that I got my ball at didn't inspire too much confidence.  It seemed like selling the ball was easy but when it came time to drill it up and do fine tuning it was more of an annoyance for him.

For the price try something from the Ogre line.
Several to choose from and the price isn't that bad.
