Title: What Do Crankers with Slower Speeds Throw
Post by: Berreez on September 21, 2003, 02:20:27 AM: Need some suggestions on a ball for one of my team mates.

He is right-handed, throws the ball about 14 MPH and has a WHOLE LOT of revs. Iâ€™ve seen him hook plastic when others are using their oil balls.

He likes to play the third arrow out to 5 â€“ 6 board. He currently is throwing a Tour Power. Not sure of the drill pattern but the pin is in the area that a left-hander would see. The oil pattern is a typical "league" pattern with drier broads too the outside. Backend is fairly dry but carrydown does occur.

I told him he probably needs something that has a high RG with a low Diff but not sure what kind of coverstock.

He has a lot of natural talent but that can only take you so far.

Heâ€™s average was close to mine last year but this year he is a good 25 pins below me.

So I guess what Iâ€™m asking is what do the slower speed crankers throw and their layouts?

Post by: charlest on September 21, 2003, 05:41:14 PM: Right now the Hot Wire is the next step down from the TOur Power ONLY because its RG is higher and you can drill it to reduce flare. I put the pin above the bridge and the darn thing barely hooks for me; I rarely have trouble making something hook.

Lower down on Storm's scale is the Hot Rod and the Big Hit balls. They have higher RGs and milder coverstocks, Curelyon and Pro-glide, respectively.

Other ball lines have a bunch of milder balls:
Power Groove,
Scout, Wild,
Green Gargoyle
Lane#1 XL

and then there are the new 2 piece core Pearl Urethanes:
Visionary Slate Blue Gargoyle
Lane#1 XXL

Post by: AllStar23 on September 21, 2003, 07:42:18 PM: My GG isnt mild at all and the stinger low flare snaps so hard...Ive seen both thrown one thrown by me ( the GG) and the stinger thrown by my brother who throws it a lot like me..Just adding my opinion..They are supposed to be drier lane balls but from what i have seen they arent..

It is "mild" in that its cover cannot handle much oil at all. On any oil it will skid 65 feet, unless you throw it slow or sand the cover. It IS a medium-light oil to dry lanes ball in stock box condition. You need to hit a lot of dry for a good amount of time before this ball will grab. AND THEN IT WILL HOOK LIKE NO TOMORROW!

I've had two of them; I've used 3 different drillings and innumerable surface modifications and have a "little bit" of revs. I feel safe in making the above statements.

Keep the pin below the fingers for a more stable roll. 105 deg.
short pin 1 -1/2" and a low top wt. drill the fingers deep to avoid a wt. hole on the negative side.

why does everyone never consider the Neg CG placement? do not be afraid of it. it give you great control and an even action

If the guy wants more backend pop on the backend. try a highly polished pearl ball place the pin above bridge and the cg at 120 des. I used a Blade Pearl but a sling blade may be a better choice for him.

Post by: captainhook on September 21, 2003, 08:51:23 PM: I throw about close to 350 to 400 P.P.M, about 16 mph, any ball with the pin above the bridge and the c.g stacked works well for me, no matter what the make of ball. the pin above the bridge gives me great length with a big back end.

I've got to give my slant on the ball, since I have probably avg. speed and above avg. high-tracking revs. Personally, the Stinger LF is one of my favorite balls, but NOT for drier conditions - it's at it's best on a Light-Med pattern for me. Mine is drilled CG in upper palm, pin straight above fingers (Ebonites suggestion for most length and mildest backend) with side weight drilled out to neg 1/2 oz, sanded 2000 grit and polished. It does go long, but recovers hard on the backend. The hard backend is why I say to beware on drier conditons. Granted, it's not the best choice for med to heavier oil, but I have used it with success on that type of shot. You just have to tighten the line up a bunch, no swinging out, and play for the late backend snap to the pocket. When they get too dry for this ball, I just start playing my Scout Urethane. On most house shots, the outside 10 boards are dry enough that a shiny urethane can be used by those with hand, and have great success. If there is oil out, I will usually use the Savage Pearl.

Hope this info will help, but to be honest, if I was looking to fit another dry lane ball into my arsenal, I would take a good look at the Lane 1 XXL and XXXL, or that new Urethane from Visionary. Good Luck!

Post by: HamPster on September 22, 2003, 12:32:44 AM: My game sounds similar to captainhook's, and I can't throw anything that doesn't have the pin above the bridge. I can hook negative drilled stuff pretty well, so weak drillings and low end balls are going to be his friend. But man, you really ought to get him to throw it a little faster. At that speed, it's going to take a Storm Hit or Brunswick Urethane Groove to do much good for him. A lot of stuff that's supposed to be for dry lanes sucks. You'll have to go urethane or lower, and put a length drilling on it, and maybe a high flare hole to help him with the backend and hit.

2. The myth about the youths having an easier shot is NOT TRUE. I'd have an entire ring collection if it was.
