warming up
« on: March 08, 2009, 08:50:36 AM »
A few weeks ago there was a post regarding weight loss etc.

My question is, in my men's league of 150 bowlers I never see anyone EVER warming up.   very few stretch, they just go out there and throw their first ball in pain.

My question is, does anyone here have a warm up ritual.

2ndly has anyone ever used an exercise band to warm up with?  Curls, rotations, shoulder presses, squats, burpees, mtn climbers etc.?

thanks

I rotate my wrist get the muscles in it warmed up, take a shot of jack daniels, then the lane come on.

My first shot is slow no real knee bend slower rotation more a less a skeleton of my normal shot. second shot the ball speed picks up along with the rev rate bend my knee more. Third is pretty much my full bore normal unless I feel something I don't like on the first two.

I stretch before leaving the house most of the time. Shoulder rolls, hand and wrist stretches , shoulder and chest stretch, hamstring and quad stretch. Takes less than 3 minutes to do those.

Edit part: Also first 2 shots on each lane go slow. Reasons for that is not fully ready. Also never know if someone has made the approaches really sticky.

I'll take a ball and swing it slowly, then more and more, while gently rotating my wrist to try to get the ligaments/tendons accustomed. Maybe some light stretching with the legs.

My first couple of shots are thrown with no attempt to really rev the ball or read the lane or impart axis tilt or any of that.

I also warm up most of the time wearing a wrist brace, then take it off once I feel my wrist is OK.

When I bowled a PBA pro-am, I was surprised at some of the warm-ups from the pros. Some of them threw quite a few "dead" balls in warm-ups (i.e., really slow or no revs) while getting loose. Ever since then, I figured if it was good enough for them, it was something I probably should do, too.

It's all about warm-up and getting your muscles loose. You can sit there and stretch, still have cold muscles and go pull something first thing.

I prefer to get in some walking first and warm my legs up that way and then add in some stretches with my legs like standing on my tip toes and back down several times. Along with some arm stuff using my bowling ball. Swing it a few times easy just to get my arm going and then  a little light arm stretching after that. All that can be done in a matter of minutes in the bowling all. Walk to the pro shop and back and then the snack bar or maybe a brisk walk out to the car real quick. Then when warm-ups start I go easy the first few pitches and work into normal speed.

Warming up is the most important thing if that is all you do. Stretching alone will equal pain and the statement "I'm not sure how it happened? I always stretch first."

common do's and don'ts found online

Do . . .

•Ensure that the muscles being stretched are thoroughly warmed-up
•Stretch at the end of your training session
•Relax
•Breathe easily
•Follow an all-over body program for stretching to avoid postural imbalances
•Avoid pain, stretching should NEVER be painful!
For the don'ts, just read more

Don’t . . .

•Try and stretch cold muscles – it’s a recipe for injury
•Stretch before your warm-up or workout
•Bounce or rock whilst holding a stretch – you could overstretch and cause an injury
•Hold a stretch for just a few seconds
•Hold your breath
•Focus on just leg stretches or just upper body stretches

Yes, I do (and I am also one of VERY few aroudn here who warm up at all), and since I started a warm-up routine with stretching of arms and legs, I never had an injury again.
