What Do You Do When Oil Pushes Down?
« on: February 08, 2010, 01:43:55 PM »
I was bowling tonight and the oil was pushing further down.  My ball began to skid past the break point and hit light on the 1-3 or hit the 3-6.

What suggestions do you typically do first?

I decided to move right 3 boards and moved my mark 3 boards to the right to get into the dry.  I ended up w/ a 601 series which I am very happy with since I avg. 180.  I am right handed too.

Ready, that's something that I have tried myself when the oil has carried down some. It seems that getting the ball to role a little sooner gets it to role through the oil instead of trying to hook through the oil if that makes sense? Or another thing that I have done is move deeper and playing inside the carry down spot and staying tight to the pocket.

I shim right 1-2 boards and bring my target back a foot or so. If that doesn't work I switch to a ball with more backend..

Both suggestions are good:
a) change your release to less side rotation/earlier roll. Taking away some speed can be helpful, too.
b) avoid polished balls. These skid in oil, so carrydown is the natural enemy
c) Move right with feet adn target and try to play around the oil.

I usually ball up right away when I start seeing carry down. I dont play with moving right cause I know that carry down can get worse fast if the wrong people are bowling.

I move to the outside around the 6 or 7 board with a polished solid such as an AMF Heist. Also a Track Heat Remake sanded to 1000 grit abralon works well for me on this condition.

I either ball up, to something that hooks earlier or has some surface.

If that doesnt work, I move right.....

Thanks everyone for all the responses.  I read the article about how oil is taken off the lanes since all the balls soak it up.  Interesting.  I'll have to look for where my ball is exiting the lane from now on (the 8th or 9th pin).  Good bowling to all!

if there is friction before the carrydown like a track area I'll move inside and bring my break point closer to me and let the ball hook before the carrydown and let it roll through it. if no friction I'll move out and try to roll it straight and early.
