what do you do with gear you are getting rid of?
« on: February 24, 2011, 01:59:49 PM »
Topic says it all. Do you toss them? Sell them? Donate them?

I donate a lady that works as a janitor in the surgery center I work in as a nephew that bowls the family doesn't have much money and he has a hard time getting new gear. I will bring a ball I am have no use for to work and let her take it to him I usually leave a sheet explaining the drill pattern does and what condition the ball will be best on. I will also have my proshop guy sell my gear cheaply to HS bowlers who need gear cheap.

In the past, I have sold, donated or gave them away.

I always give them away to my local youth league. You can sell them for ebay for 10 dollars plush shipping, but it's not really worth the hastle, and personally if you a pro shop owner it's in your best interests to cement your future customer base.

I have an uncle that doesn't have a ton of expendable cash usually, so if i'm replacing a ball sometimes ill give it to him.  We both go to the same shop and have similar spans so he can actually use my stuff without having to plug, but just put a larger thumb insert in and put his fit in.  He's on my team so it's nice to see my gear "still working for me" haha.  It's not that there is anything wrong with the equipment, I honestly get tired of looking at the same ball all the time UNLESS it's a great matchup for me.

Same thing I did with all my compound bows...GAVE THEM AWAY.

I like to give them to people who I could possibly get interested in joining leagues as a way to kind of cultivating our sport.

If they are really in bad shape they are always good for practical jokes or for target practice with the ole .50 Cal

Primarily, it ends up on ebay - balls and bags. I also sold some stuff directly through a local forum, and I donated balls to the youth programm of my club.

I used to either give them away to friends or sell them very cheap.  Now, my 14 year old son throws 15#, so he gets my hand-me-downs.  Win/Win since he gets a "new" ball every so often (we have the same span and use switch grips, so he just needs to change to smaller inserts and he's good to go) and I get a NEW ball every so often.

I know it sounds like I'm in denial, but I'm not.

When I dropped from 16 to 15lbs, I donated my equipment to the local youth league.  I have also donated to the house ball rack for some lucky person to find.  Sometimes I sell balls that I am getting rid of, usually will give a really good deal just to get rid of them. For example, I offered a Virtual Gravity (single drill) and Hy-road (single drill) package for $50 to a teammate that was using very outdated equipment.

I have gone to the G.M. at the House I bowl at. He said he would give me free game coupons I get about 25 games per ball limit 3 balls. When he tries and get new bowlers in his leagues he will give them a used ball to join so there is not much expense for the new bowler. He said it has worked all his youth and Mixed leagues are full. So in his mind to give me free games has paid off for the house.  I still bowl in 3 leagues every year in his house. I get free games for My wife and I to practice all summer. We have a few drinks and sandwich when we practice we both win. Try this Idea with you center see if it works.

The pro shop I use has a great trade in program on used equipment and they don't mark up from the trade in price very much.  Say trade in a ball worth 50 and they sell it for 70 drilled.  (Grips extra).

Sometimes I find a gem in there.   I was talking shop with my driller and a guy brings in a Pure Physics with 2 games on it because "it hooks too much".   I snagged it for $90 with a full plug, redrill, grips, and switch grip thumb outer.   I traded in two older balls I no longer use and $20 cash :)
