I'm talking about a team tournament that is 6-12 games long - like the swiss tournaments we have around here. They may or may not be capped, 5 person teams - may be mens, womens, or mixed.

It's head to head competition, with one point for individual, and 2 or 3 for team - every round a position round, with teams moving each game.

Here's the three things I look for (other than the obvious of average fitting within the cap...)
1. Someone who is either knowledgeable about lane conditions and adjustments, or will listen to me.
2. Someone who is a team player, and will stay in the settee area with the rest of the team.
3. Someone who can pick up spares.

How about you?

My buddy and I are getting a team together here for the upcoming years and asked the same question, who to get on our team? This is what we found so far:

Guys who can avg high on a THS, but have success bowling other local tournaments where the house shot isnt always used.

Guys who bowl local CBA (scratch) and ABT (masters bracket) on a continual basis

Guys who bowl the bigger local tournaments where the shot is usually a reverse block or a flood and can score on the conditions.

A couple who have a ton of hand

A couple who are versatile (can hook it or go straight)

A couple of lefties (me being one and try to find another)

Someone who understands lane conditions and how lanes will transition (lane mechanic)

We put all of this into thought and have 8 so far:

Myself (pro shop hack over 200 lefty) Tweener
My buddy (200 avg righty) Stroker
Lane Mechanic avg 235 on THS, several ABT titles can put down any shot Cranker
Lane Mechanic avg 220 THS, super versatile with old equipment Tweener
210 avg bowler, bowls ABT every weekend, usually wins more in sidepots/brackets than actual cash Cranker
210-215 avg bowler in 3 different houses, couple of junior titles. Stroker
215-220 avg bowler on 2 different house shots, 190 avg sport league bowler, versatile bowls CBA monthly plus other local scratch tournaments Tweener
200 avg junior bowler coming out very consistent on junior tournament patterns Tweener

Just need to find 2 more and we are set (preferably another straighty and a lefty) for our team. We will be then opening a bank account and having everybody deposit a certain set amount in to pay for the first couple of tournaments, then let it collect interest and all winnings go back into the pot.

Commitment to bowling would be key for a team put together with myself. The ability to read lane conditions and help each other out when you see someone is not in key with what they normally do (that's why I usually bowl with people I've known from leagues and tournaments through the years). The ability to make spares would be a must as well- there are many tournaments we bowl throughout the year where the shot is not close to a THS and you'll need to grind out games with spares.

I think I have a good team that I bowl most tournaments with throughout the year- we have fun but we take our bowling seriously on the lanes.
