What do you think of this?
« on: August 31, 2004, 06:14:50 AM »
Talked with the lane man yesterday and here's the low down on what he plans to do with the shot this year.  It will start out, for the first few/several weeks, being pretty tough.  Not quite as tough as the shot in our summer league, but close, according to him.  Then, 8 or 10 weeks in, he plans to soften the shot up until late in the year it's pretty walled up.    What's your reaction to this?  Should the shot start easy and get harder?  Hard then easy?  Or, should it more or less remain the same all year?  I think many of us would like to see several contrasting shots throughout the year, but that isn't what we're going to get.
Oh, yeah, he plans on forcing people to move out of their "stand on 24, hit 10 at the arrows" shot.  According to him this years shot will be outside of 7 (a place I personally really like).  Is this fair to everyone who has never, ever had to get outside of 10?

Personally, I like the idea of the shot changing during the season.  I would probably start out with a little easier shot and get tougher as the season progressed.  The reason for this is that a lot of people take the summer season off.

Since everyone will be bowling on it, where ever the shot is, I view as fair.

I would rather have a somewhat consistent shot from week to week.  Unless there is a reason, such as a new lane machine, I think the shot at the end of league should be about the same as the beginning.

It would be nice if your lane man can email me the programmes, so I can try and set it up on my machine!! (an old rubbish AMF Century)

I'd like to see what the 'outside of 7' shot looks like!

PM me if that's possible!!

Thanks!!

The slight problem I have with this is that it's almost like organized sandbagging.  It's almost guaranteed that your average will be lower at the beginning of the year than it would be on a THS.  It really isn't sandbagging, but it has a sort of odd feel to it, imo.

I thought the standard formula was the "Welcome Back" real easy THS for a month, then take that away after too many honor scores.  Then put out the "Come back next year" super easy THS.  What he's doing is all wrong.

I would actually like for a 36 week league that changes every 9 weeks.  Give me something different, but let me have some time to experiment so I can learn.

Rag’s I agree with you. My first reaction was that it would help the higher average bowlers.

The better bowlers will have a greater drop in their average than the mid to lower range averages.

They will get to set these lower averages and then as the shot improves so will their scores at a greater rate than the others giving them an advantage towards the end of the season as if they had bagged it.

I would say he needs to either randomly change the shot during the year on a weekly basis making it the luck of the draw on a given week or leave it the same for the whole year.

I would rather see a good shot put out every week but the placement of that shot would change. In other words the wall might be on 7 this week, 17 the next week, 12 the next, etc, etc, etc. That way the bowlers who read the lanes the best could still find a good line to the pocket but wouldn’t have their averages artificially lowered.

Yeah, that's what I thought also.  I'm getting my earplugs out - I expect a major amount of whining.

Having the lanes get progressively easier gives the lower handicap teams a big advantage.

The better bowlers will start with more handicap than normal.  Then as the shot gets easier, their average will increase without any real improvement in the bowler.

The lower average bowler (especially a straight ball bowler) who is actually improving likely won't have the skill to take advantage of the easier shot, and their real improvement will offset the gift shot given to the better bowler.

Personaly I think people will complain either way. 99% of league bowlers just want to come in and stand in the same place every week. They complain about the shot changing when it doesn't so accualy doing it I think would be funny because then they would accualy have a ligitmate complaint.

I don't care if the lane man changes the shot, as long as I know it's being changed.  Don't necessarily have to know what shot he's putting in, just that a change is being made.  Nothing worse than coming in for league, expecting the same shot that's been there for eons and not being able to score, fighting it all night, then finding out later that the shot's been changed purposely.  --  JohnP

Just my thoughts,...most leagues are handicapped, and these are set on a basic pattern that should be there for the season.  What if the lanes start out dead tuff...usually the 160 and below average bowlers aren't going to suffer that much, so they set averages. Then the lane man decides to wall'em up,..and say that on the tuff I averaged 203 and set average, and now on the wall I can average 230+,..that's not fair to the lower average bowlers,..I'm getting to use 203, and now every week I'm shooting over 700,....if the handicap was set at 90% of 220,...I'm getting pins and averaging 230. The reverse is also true, so whatever the league condition is going to be,..it should be the same all year because of handicapping, and fairness to all.

Jim, exactly - that's why it sort of feels like built-in sandbagging to me.  I think I'll suggest to him that he take a different approach to it - though the pattern won't change tonight.

RAG,..lane conditions are mute in a scratch league,..but in a handicap league where handicaps are established based on the softness/difficulty of the pattern they should be the same all year...start to finish...take five 160 average bowlers against 5 220 average bowlers that all averages were established on a THS....now put out the Nationas shot and watch the 160 guys beat the crap out of the 220 guys,...with handicap naturally.

I'd be interested in hearing what the laneman hopes to achieve by doing this.  In my opinion, bowling should always be a challenge, but I also know that bar sales go down when the shot is tough, so he may end up with an unhappy proprietor and no job if he puts that tough shot out for too long!
