What do you think of this?
« on: August 31, 2004, 06:14:50 AM »
Talked with the lane man yesterday and here's the low down on what he plans to do with the shot this year.  It will start out, for the first few/several weeks, being pretty tough.  Not quite as tough as the shot in our summer league, but close, according to him.  Then, 8 or 10 weeks in, he plans to soften the shot up until late in the year it's pretty walled up.    What's your reaction to this?  Should the shot start easy and get harder?  Hard then easy?  Or, should it more or less remain the same all year?  I think many of us would like to see several contrasting shots throughout the year, but that isn't what we're going to get.
Oh, yeah, he plans on forcing people to move out of their "stand on 24, hit 10 at the arrows" shot.  According to him this years shot will be outside of 7 (a place I personally really like).  Is this fair to everyone who has never, ever had to get outside of 10?

I think he sort of tried this a couple of years back, but capitulated when the whining reached 120 decibels.  He has been put in an interesting position though.  Those of us who bowled the "tougher than some PBA shots" summer league are, mostly, asking for a tougher league shot this winter.  I think we realize that it probably won't happen (we're in a very small minority), but Rich seems to want to accommodate us if he can.

Ok Ragnar, so his intentions are good.  I suppose the best thing for you and your friends to do is educate the rest of the league as to why the tougher conditions are more fun, and try to sway them into wanting the same.

That really is a tough situation.  Damned if you do, damned if you don't!

Rags - I understand your desire to play a tougher shot but, the whining will be unbearable.
Why not play the wrong line with the wrong ball ?
Play deep inside (5th arrow) with a weak ball.
This would definitely be a tough shot.
You get to play a tough shot and the majority get what they want. (The same easy THS shot every week)

Is it me or does it seem this sport is becoming unduly influenced by the substance  placed on the lane to protect it from wear and tear.  Reading this thread and numerous others it occurs to me that no matter how good you think you are an oil pattern can reduce your score to nothing. Of course if you have the cash and the trunk space you can get a ball that will compensate for the condition.  Has anyone been in a house that had shots that could be conquered by a particular type of Ball that just happened to be on sale in the house proshop?  At first I though the concept of a "sport shot" was a good idea, but now I think to much emphasis is on the oil pattern  and now after a bowler reaches a certain level of skill it's really the equipment he owns vs the condition he encounters more than how accurate he is.

Think about this if you've been bowling 15 yrs or more...

How many of you bring two or more balls with you on league night?
How many of you have gone to at least 3 balls. (1 for wet 1 -med/dry 1 for spares).
How many of you bring three balls in the house and keep a ball or two in your car just in case you meet a condition that renders your "Money balls " useless.

Once upon a time I used one ball (black hammer). I used it for strikes and spares. My average increased every year as I learned how to use it more effectively. I finally  put it away for good after about 11 yrs of service in 1999. By then I was using two balls.  I was actually  using an Ebonite Puma to cover the 10 pin . I've had to retrain myself over the last couple of seasons to use 1 ball for strike shots only and Ebonite Puma for spares. The oil patterns & balls out there now make shooting spares off the strike line unreliable. I'll probably get a plastic ball to shoot spares.  It's just funny how things have changed.

I think for a typical house league with a variety of handicapped bowlers, keeping the shot the same throughout the year is best. The higher average bowlers will adjust better when the conditions get easier, especially if they are comfortable with playing an outside shot.

The lane man states he wants to move people out of their stand 24, hit 10 at the arrows comfort zone. I don't see a big problem with that. The sport of bowling is about using what is given to you, making adjustments and nowadays using the right equipment to gain the best scores. Last year in my Tuesday league house for the final month of the year, the owner who oils the lanes moved the shot into more of a flatter blend but made it significantly drier on the outside 5 than he had all year. We came back this fall and he's placed a flood on those outside boards and dried out the inside 10 to 10 a little more. I've learned to take what is out there, bring the right equipment and try my best to put the highest scores I can up there.

I think if a lane man is going to change the shot a couple of times during the year, the least that can be done though is give a read out of the pattern on hand and place it on a wall somewhere for the league bowlers to know exactly what is out there...
