Post by: REVOLUTIONS PS on December 27, 2003, 10:26:07 PM: The following was is taken directly from a published insert in Bowling This Month, authored by Ebonite ball designer Ronald Hickland.

"Tests have confirmed that hear can distort, shrink, crack and reduce performance on a coverstock...During the heating process, the coverstock expands and is strained as plasticizer is expelled. This can cause cracking of the coverstock. When the heat is removed, the coverstock begins to shrink at a higher rate than the expansion, causing the ball to be smaller than the original size. This increases stress and makes the coverstock brittle. These reasons are evidence enough for Ebonite to discourage the use of heat to restore perfomance to a bowling ball."

This is not the first company to discourage the use of heat to restore bowling balls but people continue to do it. What do you think? Will this change how you feel about the use of heat to restore your equipment?

Post by: jensm on December 28, 2003, 03:52:31 PM: I have not had any experiences of heat causing brittleness in bowling balls. But then again I have only used warm water on a regualar basis. I still soak my bowling balls in warm water, but Ã do it less often and at a lower temperature. As far as I know, Ebonite has yet to establish how much heat (or cold?) it takes to cause damage to a bowling ball. Until Ebonite ventures to do this we will be in the dark on this one.

What about leaving equipment in the car on hot summer days? Any poster here with bad experiences of this?

I had a tropical storm I used to leave in the car here in florida. I had no idea heat could hurt a ball, I had just started bowling and it was my very ball. Grabbed my bag one day, went inside the bowling alley, opened my bag, and my ball had a split from fingers half way around the ball. Boy was I upset!!! The pro shop guy gave me a deal on an original black zone though so I could bowl that night. Man do I miss that zone.

Ebonite SELLS Hook Again...a non heat restorer.
Coincidence?

I have used the "Rejuvinator" in the local pro shop for years, along with MANY others, and there has not been ONE incident of a damaged ball.

Hmmm....makes one think.

use common sense and dont use really not water. my rule of thumb-it has to be cold enough for my hand to go into it-if my hand thinks its too hot-cool it down some.
