Title: What do you use for a spare ball?
Post by: carltonsportsassoc on August 18, 2003, 10:53:45 AM
Want some feed back on good spare ball. Do you throw a lighter ball for spare? Do you throw a heavier ball for spare? What kind of ball do you use for spare? Different ball for different spares? Need some info fairly new bowler 180avg and and don't like rolling same for spare. Any suggestions?

I use my Blue Hammer, throw a little harder and take a little "hand" out of it and it goes straight. Then again, if I throw it hard and straight, I can make my Hercules/Supreme go straight.

It's easy to kill a ball and make it go straight, but I always use a spare ball with the belief that it's less wear and tear on my main equipment. It's easier to replace a $50 dollar ball than it is a $200 dollar ball.

You can't go wrong with any basic Polyester ball. Pick a color you like, and polish it way way up. After it tracks up you might notice some movement, but still not much.

If you can't kill the reaction and you have slow speed, try to avoid clear balls like the Rotogrip Grenade or Everclear balls. They seem to hook pretty good for supposed spare equipment.

I use a clear wolf that I got used on this site. It's plastic with a core.I bowl a lot of extreme conditions so it can double as a dry lane ball for those 1am pot games.I can flatten the ball but I prefer a no brainer spare game so I can pay closer attention to the lane changes.

I use a storm clear football.  I am here to tell you when they are really dry this ball still hooks.  Get a white dot or a maxim something like that.

I don't really play cards and I am not 79, but it fits together somehow.

Roto Grip Cosmos, polyester drilled over the label, same weight...I keep it super shiny.....can throw it just like my strike ball and it'll only break 1-2 boards total at the most...but with my game, that's not saying much !

Ebonite Maxim.....This will be my third one in the last 4 years.....lol....I hae a tendency to pu a wear and tear on my plastics prior to this year because I would use it on most light shots and carry well with it. I bowled a season in a  house with my plastic and averaged 202...lol...High game and set with it was 276/713. I should have thrown 300 bt i had the front 8 and missed it at release and washed out. Then burried the three in the tenth frame.....LOL

If it isn't EBONITE it isn't bowling........

Spare Storm.

I'm in the same boat you are, in the 180s trying to move up.  Same weight as strike balls with finger tip inserts - everything to keep the same feel.  I just bought it a couple weeks ago and I love it.  I used to flatten my wrist and throw the strike ball at right side spares, but probably once a night I would get a slight rotation and chop a 6-10 or dump it in the gutter going for a 10.  Now I just slide it across the lane with a slight rotation, and get no hook.  I still throw the strike ball at left side spares.  It seems like it is getting me at least one more spare a league night, and for $60 it's worth it to me.

Well, you've all told carltonsportsassoc the brand of ball you use and why, but the other part of the question still needs a reply.

Do you use a lighter or heavier weight for your spare ball, or do you use the same weight for all of your equipment?

Currently I'm using a lighter ball for my spares, but I'm considering going with the same weight as the rest of my equipment to use the spare ball for all very dry conditions, so I'm interested in your responses to this part of the question, too.

I have timing problems and use the same weight balls with a red Maxim as my spare ball.  I found that I had problems more with timing when I used different weights.  A couple of years ago I switched from 16 pound equipment to 15 pound.  This caused all kinds of problems because I could not afford to buy everything of one weight.  Now that I have all my 15 lb. stuff spares are easier.  The only spare I throw the Maxim at is the 10 pin.  I prefer using 1 ball for both when ever possible.

I throw my spare ball at everything except double wood. In league I have a tendency to use my spare ball less but in tournament it all spare ball for every spare.

Both are same weight as my first ball.  I find it it easier to keep timing.  Which is crucial to getting the spare.

I throw the same weight equipment at everything.  All of the balls I own are 16lb.  I use a red/black/white swirl Ebonite Maxim for all of my 4, 6, 7 and 10 pin single spares or combination of those pins.  I also throw it at the baby split (3-10).  I throw my strike ball at everything else.  I use the same release with my spare ball, except for the fact that I don't "hit" it at the bottom of my release.  I used to flatten my wrist, but I was way too inconsistent.  I feel that my spare game has improved tremendously recently and a few people on here can attest to that.

I use a Storm polyester ball for spares that is half a pound lighter than my strike balls. That way so I get more speed on it. I also kill my wrist, so the ball does go dead straight at spares. Going straight is so much easier than hooking at them, as long as if you have pretty good accuracy.

Out of the 909, this was B-Car.

Ebonite Maxim, Black Sparkle, drilled straight up, same weight as strike balls, throw it at the corner pins. If a strike ball thrown on the strike line will hit and carry the spare, I use it. (and double wood) Used to have a Blue dot but it got so beat up and nicked, I got the Maxim. I think the original Blue Dots were actually harder than the newer ones, as they now are the same coverstock as the white dots, I think.

I'm suprised nearly 100% so far use plastic.  I for one don't.  I really can't stand it actually, too much slide and too much deflection on double wood.  I like for the ball to grab the lane a little even if it as going straight.  I can flatten out my release to the point I can send a 320 grit particle straight as an arrow on 25 feet of oil with stripped backends.  It's all in disciplining yourself in how to break your release.  I can use anything in my bag, I usually use my oldest most polished ball.  In this case it's my Werewolf or Blue Thunderstorm.  Whatever feels right at the time.

15lb Storm Blue Hot for me at the moment, and shortly to be replaced with an ebonite shooter xl. Just flatten out the storm wrist support and throw straight at em.

Pink Hammer. It's the same weight as my strike balls and can also double
as a strike ball If the lanes are fried.

i use an original faball baby blue nail. nice hard urethane ball that can also double as the fried lane ball. throw it in the oil and the thing goes straight, get it outside of the oil, up the ditch in the dry and you have yourself one heck of a strike ball. same weight as all my other stuff, #15.

Original Red Pearl Hammer. On it's 4th drilling .

Still makes a great strike ball when lanes are fried or overly spotty.

Concerning the weight, I actually went heavier. My strike equipment is 15 & my spare ball is 16. I tried lighter & was muscling it too much. I find that the little etxra weight helps me to focus on accuracy, & placing it on just the right board.

Plastic (or possibly a completely dead urethane) should be used for most spare combinations. There are sometimes exceptions such as double wood, but otherwise, the choice of plastic for spares should be automatic. As far as weight, stay with what you use on your primary ball to keep mechanics as consistent as possible.

When it comes to plastic, brand really doesn't matter. I've used Spare Storms, Target Zones and White Dots, and they all do the job.
