what does 4x4 drilling mean?

i know some about drilling but what does a layout of like 5x5 or 4x4 mean? what are differences and stuff like that

The first number is the distance of the pin from the bowler's PAP (positive axis point); 2nd number is the distance of the CG from the PAP. It does not take into account the actual location of the pin and the CG nor the length of the pin to the CG, which are also vital pieces of information.
