Change lines or switch balls?
« on: March 09, 2004, 06:02:14 PM »
I bowl in a league with my son on Sundays.  We roll 2 games for league then an extra game just for fun.  I start with my X-Factor and start right foot at 25 and throw to 15.  The ball goes out to about 5 then breaks hard for the pocket.  First 2 games I'm striking more than I'm missing -- all good pocket shots, too!! -- but my spare % sucks because I'm still working on my straight ball technique.  Third game starts and I'm still in the pocket, but now I'm leaving a 7, 7, 8, 10, etc.  I try to make adjustments, but I get a little confused as to where to go.  I'm not off by much, but I think the adjustments I tried were too big and it's an all new line for me.  Tenth frame I just grab my Sonic X and play straight up 7 and strike out for a big 140!!  Obviously the carry wasn't there in the 3rd game, but when do you make the move to another ball?  If you're just leaving solid singles, how big a move do you need to make?

So here are the results of tonights experiment.  I actually bowled about 7 games, but I'm only really looking at 3 -- things just fall apart when you can't feel your arm!!  There were supposed to be 3 of us bowling tonight, but only one showed and he was late.  I had bowled a games worth by the time he got there but it was spread over 3 scores.  I'm rolling my X-Factor, standing 25 and throwing 15.  Again, the ball is going long and just slamming the pocket.  Everything is carrying and I start 232.  Next game, I get a little funky with my mark over the first few frames and start leaving slop.  I get the mark back, but it's coming in a little on the nose.  I move back a few inches and start hitting the pocket again.  Pull out a 164.  Third game, the X-Factor is starting to cross over, so I move a couple boards left with feet and target.  Ball starts going long and not coming back.  Moving the target back results in crossover again.  Decide now is the time to go with the Sonic X.  Start playing 20 to 10 and start striking/carrying again, but it's too late and end up 152.  So, in the nutshell, I think I'm starting to see what's happening -- it's just a matter of how long I go before I find the right combination.  Hopefully it won't take too many years!!!  Golf seems so much easier!!

When I warm up before league I try out all of my equipment, as I never know what the owner has put out there for a shot. Sometimes the pair you end up bowling on will have a shot that holds up for 1 1/2-2 games, but then you need to move to a weaker ball as the head oil is gone or carried down leaving a spotty reaction. In a tournament, especially in a house I don't bowl very often in, I throw every ball I bring with me to see how things match up. The last tournament this fact came in handy as one pair worked well for a heavier oil shot, and another pair was significantly drier, requiring me to use the appropriate ball and score well.

The only ball I have to test is that pesky but rewarding
Pro Purple. Just like everyone told me that ball is plain
unpredictable, NOT in  a BAD way but on any given lane condition
I DO NOT know what this ball is going to do until I throw it.

I had the same problem this Tuesday. Hitting the hole but
not carrying crap, shot 195 clean and was afraid to move more than 1-2
boards either way to try to carry. I switched balls on the last ball in the
tenth and shot 209 with a couple of opens. carry was better but getting to the
pocket was more of a challenge.
