Too much polish & removing it
« on: December 12, 2004, 07:41:50 AM »
I recently overpolished a ball and the ball is giving me a little less than a desirable reaction. The ball seems to hook a lot less than originally. Although this gives me a much more consistant look on drier conditions, the ball hardly moves in oil. I just purchased a green heavy duty scotchbrite pad, and was curious as to what difference this would make to the ball if I was to hit it up with the pad. Any input is appreciated.

Try a blue scotchbrite pad first...there will be a DRASTIC difference going from polish to the green pad.

Blue scotchbrite pads do NOT work! They dont even scratch the surface of the ball. The main difference though will be the ball will roll much more evenly, and arc a lot more, and roll earlier, compared to it going farther down the lane and turning. It really depends what you want to use the ball for. If its for dry lanes I'd say leave it polished, or hit it with a scotchbrite, and re polish it to a lower grit, or if you want it for heavier oil, sand it with the scotchbrite.

Bowling Kid & TJ Freaky,

Green pads, 600 grit, allow you to modify the surface by hand, gradually, gently, in small stages. The blue pad is 2 steps above; it is about 1000 grit. The inbetween pad is light grey and is about 800 grit.

The green can be applied by hand with light to medium pressure. The grey and the blue really need a spinner and the blue does need a good deal of pressure.

What I suggest is to use the green pad just enough to remove some of the shine/polish. Do it in stages, in practice, to get where you need to be.

IF YOU WISH TO START ALL OVER AGAIN, use the green pad, with the ball on a spinner AND WATER!!! That should take the ball to 600 grit dull or matte. Then apply polish, gently, in small stages. I REPEAT, "gently, in small stages"!  Use a clean cloth to remove the dried polish. First stage should be such that  there's barely a shine on it. If that's not enough, press SLIGHTLY firmer with another small amount of polish. Then use another clean cloth to remove.

Do it in small stages.

Depending on the amount I want to dull the ball I use either a white (1500) or grey (1000). White does require quit a bit of pressure though.

Normally if i polish up a ball, and want to return it to box condition i just get some sandpaper, of the grit it came in.

Or, sometimes i take it one step lower and go with 800grit instead of 1000, and so on.

But normally if the ball comes scuffed up, i leave it that way.  I normally only polish up a ball that comes with a high box condition, like over 1000
