What do you do??
« on: January 12, 2004, 06:03:44 AM »
When you guys trade equipment with each other, how many of you clean the ball(s) before you ship them out??

I clean it thoroughly because I want the recipient to see that I took care of the ball(s) I was sending. Plus it makes the ball look as good as it possibly could, unless you resurface before you send. But how many of you clean before shipping??

I don't do anything to them.  Course I clean them up after every league session so they are in pretty good shape.

As far as refinishing, most of the people I trade with will probably at least plug the thumb.  That's going to require the proshop to do a lite refinish anyhow.  Can't see any reason to take extra material off the ball.

Same token with the balls I buy used.  As long as the seller is honest about the weight and accurate on the condition (IE gouges, major scratches) I'm happy.

This could probably be considered a topic hijacking, and if it is, I apologize ahead of time.

I've never sold or traded a ball through the mail before.  How is it done?  Do you just go to a UPS store and ship it?  What about boxing it?  Will they pack it for you and supply the packaging?  I don't have bowling boxes (or any other, for that matter) in my house.  Do you double box it?  Do you use stuffing or some type of bubble wrap in the box to protect it?  I'd hate to send out a ball improperly and get "slammed" here.

TIA

"topic hijacked"

I have used UPS and Fed EX and both are fine.  You just want to make sure
you stay away from USPS.  Double boxing is a must too.

"topic released"

Seeing as I clean my ball after I get finished they are already clean.
I'll clean dust off if it a ball that has been sitting around awhile.

I give the specs of the ball I never do any of the plugging, as they may
want their proshop to do it.

What do you do? is the subject question...

I do what I do!

Sorry, I had to do it.  When my son was 4 he used that line on me, cute and funny at the same time.  Now I use it all the time!  I can still hear him saying it...    love that little guy!

Man,

You and Rags could release the topic, or have demands not been met yet.
I'll have to add that line to my smart @$$ comments

I clean the ball until it's as close to mint as I can get it without a total re-surfacing. Even polish dried into scratches I remove. If I don't like the way it looks, If I would not want to get that ball, I don't send it.

If the ball has the beginnings of a track, so that you can cee the whole track, even if only barely, I will try to take many of those scratches out via a minor re-surfacing, maybe 400 grit sandpaper and take it to 600 and polish, if it came polsihed. I would not do a total, which for me is 180 or 220 grit to remove as many scratches as possible, without making the ball smaller.
