What happens?
« on: May 21, 2003, 01:50:46 AM »
When you drop from 15 to 14lb. equipment do you notice a big difference in ball speed?  Are
you able to get the ball out more?  How about the carry?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

14 actually feels too light.  I'd thought about doing that until my wrist gets stronger, but the last time I bought a 14, I regretted it.  If you have a problem with muscling the ball, lofting it, or heaving it, a 14 is only going to make them worse because it just makes it easier to do those things.  This is just my opinion though, so don't go off it alone, wait for others to chime in that have had more experience.  It might just have been a problem with me.

I dropped from 16 to 15 last year.  I did notice for a while (maybe I got used to it) that my speed naturally increased.  If I needed a little more juice for drier conditions, it doesn't seem quite as difficult to maintain accuracy.  Also, at the end of the night I'm not quite as tired.  Used to be a heavier ball was one way to get more drive through the pocket, but with todays stronger cores and coverstocks, 14 lbs. should not give up that much in carry power.  I say this in speculation, as I have not thrown 14lbs.  Good luck with whichever decision you make!!

I read a article somewhere that a lot of the Pro's are turning to 14lbs now.

Most the guys I know that are using a 14# are using the heavier end of the scale at 14# 1/2 or more vs. the 14# 4oz that I use.  The 1/2# less than their 15# is enough to give them some speed or ease up on an injury.

Hey guys,

Like most everyone, I'd heard that switching from 16 back to 15 could increase carry, as it supposedly cuts down on some of the overhitting leaves like 8 and 9 pins. I traded for a used 15lb ball, and even selected a 15 when I bought a new one. I noticed that I was able to turn up the 15lb stuff a little harder than my 16s, and that I had to watch my speed a lot more with the 15s. For me, a stroker, it was harder to just ease through the ball when I was playing straighter lines. However, I found it a bit easier to swing the ball when that was needed. Lastly, I did see a difference in carry, but it was a negative difference. When I hit high flush the carry was the same as with my 16lb stuff, but when I hit light I hardly ever get the mix that I get from 16. Likewise, I also think that you have to be more precise in order to take out the corners.  My conclusion is that, for pros and others who can consistently get identical placement in the pocket, lighter can be good. However, for people who are in the pocket, but not in the exact same place every shot, heavier might still be better. I know some very solid and successful bowlers who use lighter weights with much success, but it seemed to hurt me more than it helped. Just my two-cents.

bob hanson hit it on the head. there is a good article on this in this months issue of bowling this month. i do not see more deflection with a 15lb. ball---i'm seeing less ! i have used a 14lb. ball and you have to make a better shot to carry. maybe i should go back to 16lbs.........

From everything I've been hearing here on this site, in BTM, and everywhere else, I've been convinced to try 15#.  I've always thrown 16#, but the possibility of picking up some revs with 15# would hopefully be enough of a good thing to offset any of the possible negatives.  Gene J Kanak's post here sounds a bit of an alarm, but I think it's time to give 15# a try.  I'd rather risk a couple hundred bucks now than find out several years down the road that I should have tried it sooner.

I plan to pick up an Inferno pretty soon, and I'm going to get a 15 pounder.  I'm pretty settled on a drilling, but would still welcome some tips.  I have a bit of a discussion going with Brenton Davy about this subject in the Brunswick forum under the post title "Anyone Compared Inferno to Diesels?".  I'd welcome comments from the folks in this thread.

Most peculiar.  My mailbox says that leftside replied to this topic, and yet there is nothing from leftside here.  I've gone from not getting email notifications of replies to posts to getting notifications of non-existent replies to posts!  This doesn't have anything to do with the Matrix, does it?
