Scorpion is a b!tch...
« on: July 17, 2009, 01:48:18 AM »
I bowled on the Scorpion pattern for the first time last night in my PBA Experience League.

Fared all right, but golly that pattern is long and tight.  I started with my Break S-75 throwing 13 to 10 at what felt like half speed.  After 3 games I switched to my Black Widow Venom and rolled it 15 to 11 at a more normal speed.

The opposing team didn't show up last night so all we had to do was bowl within 10 pins of our average to get a win.  We won all 7 points to maintain our position at number one, but it was a struggle.  I missed my average on 3 out of the 4 games.  Thank goodness my wife wanted to be my partner in this league.  She's a tiny little thing and throws an 8 lb. Maxim straight as an arrow, but she was on last night picking up at least 3/4 of her spares and striking more than I thought possible.

Kudos to the wife!

The Scorpion definately plays tight, but really opens up when it breaks down because of the volume of oil.  I had great success on it throwing a sanded Gravity Shift inside with softer speed, and also playing a very direct line up the boards with a lightly polished Spit Fire, doing the ol' Norm Duke tumble-it-soft release.  Keep your hand soft and behind the ball a lot, which should help the ball pick up in the midlane.  This will get you better carry and a little more miss room from what I've seen.

How dumb is it that when I bowled a PBA league last summer, this was the pattern I scored best on?  I throw 13 to 14 mph at best, REALLY slow, and I stayed enough in the middle (targeting the 15 to 20 boards) that I didn't leave a lot of corner pins.  Odd.

Similar here with my Perfect Rival. It plays better though if I can start more outside with an oil soaker for a game and then jump inside to this area or a touch deeper. Then I can really open up the lane and it plays very similar to a house shot just a tight one.
