What Inspires You to Buy a New Ball
« on: February 23, 2011, 03:11:15 AM »
With new balls coming out each month from the different companies, what makes you decide to get another ball?

1) 2-3 more boards of hook?
2) potentially more carry?
3) ???

Fill in the blank.

Will you get the honest answer....

It's because I need to show everyone I have the latest equipment. I can't be seen throwing something that is less than 2 years old. I must have the newest ball so I can talk to my fellow bowlers and describe how much better this ball is than one I purchased two months ago. It's all about staying ahead of the game. Practice takes too much time. Why practice when these ball manufacturers guarantee me that this new ball is the answer to my lack of bowling skills.

Knee jerk Pavlof reaction to new sht..

If you think about it, no matter what you have in your arsenal, the new stuff really isn't any better or that much different than what you already have.

There really hasn't been any "new" leaps in technology since the advent of reactive resin..

To those who have replied that it fills a gap in your arsenal.  What criteria do you use to make that decision?   Is it the brand of the ball, the core, the coverstock, reviews, someone else you have seen throwing it and carrying the world?

What makes you decide to try the ball?

I think this is the most likely answer. Bowling like anything else, is a d*ck measuring contest. Mine is newer, better, bigger etc than yours!

because i more or less just want to get a new ball, i don't care what the ball does usually, i'll make it work.  i've ordered 3 balls this week, a Rising, Striking Motion, and a Boom R'Ang.  Sure, most overlap with some of the other 15 balls i already have, but i got good deals on all three so i decided to buy them

I'm just a ball w-hore, but I like to buy different stuff from everyone else.

For example, two years ago I bought a NIB Nu-Line Gauntlet from ebay and I absolutely love the ball

I have purchased InSite equipment (Revelation and Second Coming)

I just like to try one or two pieces from each company to see what I like and go from there. I am far from brand loyal.
I am not one of those people that goes running out to buy a new ball as soon as it hits the shelf to have the newest thing. If I get one for free (like the Wicked Seige, thanks BrunsNick) then I will gladly bowl with it.

I'm in the process of trying to find out where I fit in the bowling world. I do not know my tech specs of my game, but it's all a learning process.

I guess by "new ball" you mean new release. Which the only reason I buy one of those is I got a great deal. Most new equipment I buy has been out for a while, seen some reviews, some vids, some people using it, maybe even tried it to make sure it is something I can use and not just an impulse buy for something that is just out.

Be good, or be good at it.

…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

For myself, it's to fill in gaps / replace older stuff......   Like I got a Theory when it was new and used a similar drilling that was on my Virtual Gravity ( which i love ) so when my VG is too strong i can goto my Theory...

I did the same with my Marvel, used a similar drilling... So i can just change balls...   Sometimes, If I see a review by a Staffer like Riggs, I'll try that drilling on said ball....     I mean this year I've purchased Two theory's, two Tropical Heats, a Marvel, and the Natural...

I'll probably wait on the VG Nano till next season, and Same with the Victory Road...

The answer is in my profile:

I'm a ball whore! It's a sickness. Probably stems from not getting the toys I wanted when I was younger!

But, I don't buy "new" balls.  I either pick one up that is used, or wait for them to be discontinued and buy them at close out prices.

Because I want to, at this point I don't need anything. But I want a new ball so I try to pick one from the many available, might be the look, fancy bs they are marketing or whatever. Same reason I buy a new shirt when the ones I have are fine. Just want something new.

When I get the itch to get a NIB, it's more because of the "want" factor. I have no need for the balls that I have purchased since my older stuff does well on conditions I bowl on. Likewise, having a spinner in the garage for the past 4 years have really helped me keep and use my older equipment. So, the newer balls that I've purchased, or the ones given to me for free, all sit in a storage unless I decided I want to use them for the week or for tourneys.

After a while though, most of my stuff is then given away to friends and family.
