What is bowling?
« on: March 02, 2005, 02:52:45 AM »
This thread is in response to Jim's thread "Is this right"...

What does bowling mean to you?  I don't want answers about what bowling means to others, I'm asking YOU!

Is bowling...

A) a competitive sport that you enjoy competing against others of similar skill levels, or at least you wish the sport was more fair and competitive?

B) a recreational sport that you enjoy playing with friends and family either in league or open play?

C) a theraputic, ignorance is bliss "happy place" where you can feel like you are talented at something (ever see pleasantville?)?

D) all of the above (gotta have that one in there)

What if we posed this question as is to the neanderthal morons that whine about "the shot" when there's award scores and 700's all around them?  I think I'll print it up and implement it as a "here's your sign" concept.

aaaaahhhh, I feel so much better now

Of the answers you list I'm closest to A.  But really, it's more about competing with myself.  On any given night, on any given pattern, can I execute up to my ability?  Can I figure out what is going on and find a way to maximize my potential?  Can I get my head out of the way and just throw the rock?  Bowling is one of those rare things where you compete against others, but really YOU are the "enemy."  If I win and bowl badly I don't like it.  If I lose and the other guy bowls badly I don't like it.  What I like is for my opponent to bowl well and for me to bowl better.

I would have to say "A" for me, although I agree with Ragnar about competing against yourself.

We bowled the "blind" team last night, and I hated it.  I bowled above average, but never felt like I got into a rhythm all night, and it was not that much fun. It was like glorified open bowling, except I couldn't work solely on certain aspects of the game because we still had to perform well enough to secure the points.  It just wasn't the same without the competition...

I agree, I am A as well and maybe a bit of D.  I enjoy feeling like I'm good at something too and enjoy the fun our league members have together.

I guess the main point of my rant at the end of the first post was seriously, what if we posed this question to people when they act like one of their family members had been murdered because they are bowling poorly or when the shot truly is a little different than the previous week?  I think people totally lose perspective when they whine like that.  Maybe this would sort of get them to laugh at themselves a little when they can see how ridiculous they are being.

Bones, I like your response and have had nights that works for me

Overall I'd have to say I'm with the A Team.  I compete against myself and others.  I especially enjoy having those games or sets where I beat out the Big Dogs, those nights are sweet

Deffinitly "D". All of those are what bowling is to me. I love the challenge of bowling people who are on or above my skill level, but on the same note I like to go bowling just shoot the sh*t with friends. (havn't gone bowling out of league or tournaments in over a month at least though) So yea, its just overall fun, except on those days when I suck, which is about 95%...but I mean the 'really' bad days.

D. I love bowling. I love the competetive style that some people have, and that I can get. I loved watching the college tourney's cuz they got so hype. I love bowling with my friends and (whenever my family ever wants to) family. Also, bowling gets me away from the world that can sometimes make my life so hard. Prolly more C than anything though. I first got into bowling to avoid what hurt so bad, and its been that way ever since. Thankfully I've gotten a lil better than my two-finger, houseball, no lights cuz it was rock-n-bowl days. If I didnt have bowling, I dont know wut I would do.

Hey BK, when I come bak the 25 we are going bowling w/ my new stuff. Don't tell me the last time you open bowled was the last time we went...
