what is considered a proper way to hook a ball?
« on: February 23, 2007, 02:06:46 AM »
I have nights when i throw a good hook and days when it feels like i'm not doing it at all. I always wanted to know what is the proper way to hook a ball consistently?

I'm not sure if there is a "proper" way to throw a hook.  First of all, you have to take what the lanes are giving you.  After that, you should decide what line you want to play or are capable of playing with your shot and/or equipment.  Once you're on that line you just need to focus on making good, consistent shots and adjusting when the shot transitions.

Pretty vague, I know, but there are so many variables that play into it.  It could be that you're at the stage where you just need to work on consistency, so you're throwing the ball the same way every night.  That's probably the most important thing.  After that you can try tweaking your release and timing to add or remove speed, revs, axis rotation, etc.

If consistency is your main issue, a coach could help you work out the kinks in your game that are causing it.

(1)Buy hooking monster ball, preferably dull.
(2)Stand on left side of lane(for right hander).
(3)Throw ball towards right gutter.
(4)Watch ball hook back to pocket and carry.
(5)Start saying you are ready for the pro tour.

If I could carry the 10, I'd be dangerous.

well, a good start is having two fingers + a thumb in the ball...  any less than that is just ridiculous

There is no correct way to do it, everyone does it a little different.  But the main component of a hook is the thumb coming out of the ball first and the rotation being imparted by the fingers.

...and try to keep your hand behind the ball, i.e. do not break your wrist and let the ball follow your hand.

"When the ball encounters friction it will travel in the direction of it's rotation."  THEREFORE...............

Take that, Randy Petersen!!!

Now I'm ready for the ESPN telecast.

If I slide one foot behind the line and still get a strike, does that make the formula null and void?
