what is heavy oil?
« on: November 29, 2003, 12:49:23 PM »
Ok this question has been bugging me for the past year.  around how many units of oil is considered to be true heavy oil?  how many units of oil is considered to be dry?  how many units is considered to be in between.  the other day in a tournament we had a sport shot that the pattern was 43 ft.  straight accross and 24 units of oil per board.  to me that felt like lots and lots of oil.  but is it truly heavy oil compared to other houses around the nation?  just curious.  thank you.

24 units is generally considered light oil. 50+ units is generally considered heavy.

However, if they actually applied 24 units for the full 43 feet LONG, then some stroker, low rev people will probably have trouble. An "ABC sanctioned" sport shot cannot, I believe (not 100% positive) have a totally flat shot; that is, 24 units on every board, although that should be a fairly tough shot, especially around the 4th game.

You can apply oil heavy and short (24 ft) or light and long (40+ ft.) or any amount and distance in between. Each brings its own surprises as the lanes are played.
