To Loft or Not to Loft?
« on: February 02, 2011, 07:54:47 AM »
For Starters, I am a low rev bowler, a stroker aprx 14-15 mph, I know when I watch the bowling telecasts

they mention if you want to cut down on the hook, you Loft the ball, but when I try to lay the ball down early, the ball doesn't pick up the back end I am looking for, for me it the opposite, when I loft about 1 to 2 on the lane I get more hook, maybe because of low revs, but accuracy suffers when I loft, Any thoughts?

What may be happening is when you loft the ball retains it's energy and used it on the back end. When you put the ball down early it burns up early and doesn't have any pop.

Laddog had a good thought in that if you are playing the dry and setting the ball down early then it is burning up early and will not have a pronounced hook.

Another thing is how you loft the ball.

The pro's tend to release the ball at a higher point above the lane but the balls trajectory is level to down feeding into the lane.

Many amateurs tend to hit up on the ball to gain loft. This hitting action will cause an erratic amount of hook and can often produce more hook.

Pinbuster is IMHO right: loft can be a tactical tool to cope with dry heads, but what's more important on a general level is the trajectory plane into which direction the ball is actually released. With modern balls, a smooth laydown in parallel to the lane surface is vital - at the lowest point of the pendulum, when the ball moves horizontally. Intentional loft keeps this plane, but the ball is still fed to the lane in parallel to the surface.

Upward loft is a release flaw, though - generally cased by a late release, when the ball has already passed the lowest pendulum point and is moving upwards again. As a side effect, the thumb tends to stay in the ball for too long, and the ball is grabbed too strong. You might even come around the ball too much or top it, lowering the track, and you lose control though the bouncing. Effectively, this flaw kills revs and momentum.

I usually loft the ball 5-8 feet out. I have noticed this season that when doing this I do get more backend pop because I do hit up on the ball more than when I lay the ball down just over the foul line. I used to play straighter but since I started lofting it on a regular basis I have increased my rev rate thus increasing pin carry. My average has been steadily going up and I have noticed myself stringing bigger strings of strikes together. For me, lofting has defintely helped me out.

Think of it this way..

You have allot of variable when watching others bowl..

Ball Strength

Entry Angle

Hand Position

Arm position/Release

Shoulder Position

Lane condition

I would suggest practicing verses listening to others because nobody bowls the same.

I will give you this much - With your shoulders square you will be more response vs having your shoulders side ways..
