Hey Guys,

Want some of your input. How do you or have you explained to NON-bowling family members that you HAVE to go bowling vs a birthday dinner say? I've been stuck in this type of predicament too often and somewhat guilt ridden at times but I also have a commitment to my teammates. As I'm getting older, the family's getting bigger and this situation is coming up more often. The non-bowlers always ask, "why can't he miss bowling, it's just one week?" My teammates are mad if I do because we have tougher rules, you miss and it's minus 10 from the lower of your 2 averages(entering or current), don't show up and get penalized. I welcome and appreciate all feedback. Sawbones and Charlest, I'm especially looking for your thoughts on this. Thanks a lot.

Sorry, forgot to mention subs are tough or not available due to team avg limits and 1st pl in one of the leagues is worth $20,000(5K per man), pretty good. Thanks.

Can you not get a sub? If a sub is not possible, just tell them that your teammates get penalized, and each and everyone of them has money on the line every week. Skipping bowling hurts them financially. Sure, it may only be a couple of bucks a point, but that's important to many people.

I can usually justify the bowling to my family.
They are really supportive, and generally very understanding.

However - I occasionally have to travel for work. I have to miss one night next week, and two nights a couple of weeks out. That stinks!!!
And I can't convince my boss that bowling is more important - he's been known to say "and how do you afford to bowl???"

You actually had to promise the wife you wouldn't let bowling interfere? I thought I had it bad.

Bowling actually use to cause me all kinds of grief. Not because it took too much time, but because she thought on the nights she didn't go, I was out trying to meet women. Since that episode of my life is done, I'm back to bowling the 3-4 nights a week like I wanted, instead of the one while I was married.

ok ok i get this all the time . the night i went into labor with our oldest daughter anyone want to guess what he had that night . oh me , bowling league
so i go into labor about 5:15 . bowling starts at 6 . i knew right then and there he wanted to go that night being that its was a big night . i told him to go . i was in the first stages and he came right back after league . oh by the way i had her at 11:06 the next morning . for the next week can you guess where he was . home with our daughter and me ! she had a heart problem he knew i was worried about her. so he told his team "find a sub" if you give a little you get a lot more in return . knowing that i would not have her till later i gave him the chance to go . in return he jumped at the chance to help me . marriage and family is a game of ride the fence . sometimes you do it right sometimes you fall off . try finding a sub if you cant bowling will not be mad at you team mates might be but do you have to live with them all the time ?
remember you only have one chance to see that event you guys can come back in leagues and win it all . can you ever relive that moment you missed with your family ? i would think long and hard ......... what means more someday you may not be able to bowl but your family is something that is not replace able or the moments that you share .
we have 2 daughter every moment is something i remember they are only gonna be this age once .

Triggerman, that is very commendable, it sounds like you have a wounderful wife, and it makes all the sense in the world. I was thinking she was forcing you, but to do it voluntarily, it's a sign of class. Kudos.

Buzzhead, a friend of mine who I bowl with in a mixed league, actually bowled the night she had her baby. She started in labor while bowling, but didn't think it was bad enough to leave. Once she finished her set, she went to the hospital, and two hours later, another future bowler was born. I guess that's a different kind of dedication. Her husband who was on the team was trying to get her to go to the hospital.

i hate to miss bowling but i will if i have to,like for an important family event. its not that hard to get a good sub so it doesnt really hurt our team. most of my family bowls though so i dont really have to deal with that many of those type of predicaments.

Thanks everybody for all the feedback. I also feel family must come first but my personal situation is slightly different and I failed to go into detail for all to see. So here goes, my wife of 13 years has 7 siblings of which have an average of 3-4 children each and I have 4 stepchildren and 3 grandchildren now. So if my abacus is still working, the count is around 50 some odd family members at each birthday, christening, anniversary, plus holidays. I was extremely supportive when we first got married but after a few years I realized I gave up almost every weekend to some sort of family function. It was always something, I never bowled any tournaments or anything anymore. A few years back I went through some elbow surgery and soon I'll have to be going in for rotator surgery. I decided I was going to be a little selfish and bowl sometimes vs attending another family function. I don't know how the surgery will turn out,(bad tendons) and I don't know if I'll ever be the same.

Bowling was all I ever knew, it was all I ever wanted to do. It was the only thing I had accomplished to some degree of satisfaction that made me feel good about myself. So now with the info supplied...am I still being too selfish?

after hearing that i would have to agree. i come from a family of 5 kids 13 grand kids and 1 great grand child and thats just my moms . don't get me started on the rest. family stuff that is not with them i tell him to go why make him sit there be bored out of his mind . now if its one of the 21( 21 for my parents . had to add them). he better go or his mother in law is on his butt. ( just so everyone knows she supports his bowling habit more than me i get a ball here and there for him or maybe a shirt once in a while . she buys a zone 6 ball roller shoes balls . yes i said his mother in law ( MY MOM)) .his mother wants him at all her family function ( i forgot to tell you all she hates him bowling at all. says it will never get you anywhere and its a waste of money . but she goes to bingo every night of the week. my mom supports him huh yeah its really screwed up here). half the people you see all the time the other half you have no clue who they are . if its not your close family i would not hammer my brains out about it . go bowling !!!!!!!!!!!
