Wrist Injury Conundrum
« on: February 24, 2009, 05:03:32 AM »
I recently injured my wrist in a non-bowling related incident.  After seeing two doctors we have concluded that I sprained my wrist pretty good.  The common fix for this would be to wear a brace to isolate wrist movement and take it easy for 4-8 weeks.  With the season coming to an end I want to bowl.  I want to help my teams as mush as possible.  It is too late for a sub or new teammate to get enough games in to bowl in position rounds so that is not an option.  Taking ten pins below my average and not bowling really does not help my teams and it annoys me that I would have to pay and not get to bowl.

Even more frustrating is that I had recently made some changes to my game that were beginning to pay off.  My accuracy and consistency were greatly improved.  I have not been practicing since I hurt my wrist and therefore have not been able to reinforce my new good habits and am actually regressing back into my old bad habits.  Plus, it is worse when you are in pain and your body doesn't always respond the way you expect it to.

I am not against getting a wrist brace to bowl with, but I am concerned it may become a crutch that will be hard to get away from once my wrist is better.  Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Don't risk injuring your wrist even worse.  Take a few weeks off so that you can bowl again in the future.  Don't rush back too soon from an injury and just make things worse like I've seen so many people do.  And the plus about taking some time off is that it does tend to help you get out of some bad habits and come back with a clean slate.

Take some time off.

And this is the best, most comfortable wrist support I've found and used:

I've been in exactly your position.

My advice is not to bowl, at least not for a couple of weeks. If you've got a doctor giving you an 8-week estimation on full health, however, two weeks might not nearly be enough.

Using a properly fitting wrist brace will help when you decide to return, but only if you already know how to use one. I bowl with one or without one depending on how my wrist feels. It's almost two completely different styles of bowling and having the brace on won't equal automatic protection for your wrist. Even when I wear a brace I am capable of overexerting my wrist. If you're just learning how to throw with a brace, it may take some time to get accustomed to it, which could foul up your A-game not to mention making you a liability for your team.

As to which brace to use, it's hard to say. I've found the adjustable braces are the way to go, because a straight-back brace might not offer your wrist support in the place it needs it most. I have to use one that holds my wrist in a slight cup due to where my injury is.

Take the time off and recover.  While you might be able to bowl there a few things that could happen.

A. Nothing
B. You bowl, and bowl poorly and end up hurting your teams
C. You bowl and injure yourself even worse and render yourself unable to bowl for the forseeable future.

Give yourself the time the get well.  The doctors want you to wear a wrist brace to isolate any wrist movement at all....not so you can bowl.  Listen to them, don't endanger your health and bowling for the years to come.

Exactly what he said.  I hurt my wrist pretty bad in March '07.  We spent the entire season in and out of 1st with another team.  Instead of just chilling out for a while and likely being fine for the last 3 weeks, I bowled 3 more weeks and messed up the wrist more....I was out for over a year afterwards.  To add insult to injury, we eventually finished 3rd.

Long story short, don't be stupid.  Heal up.

If you can find a bowler you should be able to add him to the roster depending on your league rules. Safest bet is to call the secretary and add him before the next bowling night. You definitely don't want to injure your wrist more.

Exact. I have been in a similar situation, and all I can say is: no heavy duty with your injured hand, be it bowling or heavy lifting etc. Give it at least 5 weeks time to heal, and then gradually start playing again. Do not risk a further or more complicated injury, that will help your team (and yourself) even less in the future.

Be patient

Well I know what you are going thru I am there right now my self.  Friday night league in the 8th frame of game 2 I felt a sharp pain in my wrist.  I rested it all weekend and put it a wrist brace all weekend.  Last night I bowled but I probably should not have since I can barely move the wrist right now.  I have to bowl again tonight since it is a position round and our sixth man is all ready bowling.  I wear a Moro Pro extended wrist support any way so I found the one thing that got me thru the night last night was to make sure I locked my wrist thru the entire shot.  I am not recommending bowling while injured but I also understand the desire to continue also.  It is easy for all of us to tell you to take the time off but when it happens to you it is not an easy decision.  after this week I am going to take at least a week off so I can try and heal fully before Nationals.  Good luck in your decision.
