Three or four for pee-wees, but to hold a ball properly, I say five.

One thing I hate seeing is perfect old enough children two handing it because their parents do want to hurt their little underdeveloped egos. It f'n makes me sick! I used to coach and hated it every day! Please don't let your child pass six at the latest and use two hands?!

As far as ball weight I think it is 1# for every 10#'s of the childs
weight, so whenever the child weighs about 60#'s, can walk, and starts
asking to bowl.

Althought you can start them in the houshe with those kid games.

I was able to start my son at about 3 with duck pins although they don't exist very much anywhere anymore. He started bowling league with tenpins when he was 4(a few months from 5). Had a 6 lb ball drilled for him which the guy drilled as a sligth "claw" so he could easily hold on to it. He's now 16 and a top junior. One thing you have to be prepared for is watching his span because they grow so fast and the ball weight because you want them to throw whatever they can handle.

Good luck

My son is 3 and has bowled a lot in the bowling center. He has about 3 or 4 different bowling sets that he bowls with everyday. When we have the tv on he asks to watch bowling at all times of the day. We will probably start him in a league next season. I have thought about giving up bowling myself to work more with him but then realize that I think that would be wrong to do. My biggest advice is make sure that he is interested in bowling and not to force him into it.

depends on the kid, 3-4 is a good range, if your kind is a wussy of 3 year old then wait till 4-5 years old.

I don't know when I started throwing the ball one handed, but I can tell you I was  always enthusiastic about the sport as a young kid, and I bowled my first league in 1993-94 season, and I was born in July of 1990 so.

Get him into golf and let bowling be a hobby.  There is so much more to offer him in golf than bowling.  It's just the sad truth.

Teach the kid the importance of spares and that hooking does not equal strikes.

My girls are 8 and 10, and they've only recently gotten strong enough to throw a 6lb ball with one hand.  I'm not sure you can rush them into bowling.  It's one of those things where hand and arm strength is critical, and you just can't do it until you are strong enough.  Obviously, strong enough is going come at a different time for every kid.

So, start out by feeding them protien shakes and taking them to the gym when they are 2 and by the time they are 5 they will be benching about 250... just kidding but there is one really young kid maybe 4 or so at the bowling alley and he bowls good. He uses his dads ball which i would imagine is atleast 14LBS but he bowls like 80-120's its pretty amazing. I saw that and was like...this kids going to embarass me..lol

Depends on attention span, body size, etc. IMO - If your child can hold a 6# ball conventionally with three fingers and approximate a std. swing and release, then they might be OK. Don't expect perfection (in performance, behavior, attitude, etc.), and it will be an enjoyable experience for you both.

I waited until my oldest son was 6 to get him into his first league. He is small for his age, and weighs only 44 lbs. He doesn't always focus on the game like he needs to, and we're still working on manners and lane etiquette. He can do a somewhat normal swing with the 6# ball, but his ball speed is very slow (4-4.5 mph!). Sometimes, the ball doesn't even leave the pin deck before stopping. LOL!

ok I will chime in
it does depend on the age of each kid of course, and you can have them bowling without being in a league

my son started in a bumper league @ 3 1/2 he bowled that for about a year and I noticed he was starting to throw the ball 1 handed, and he is kinda small/skinny mainly not hieght.. but after a half year on bumbers throwing 1 handed i noticed he could avg about 60's with 1 hand and no bumpers, so I moved him up to the actual league and for his half season he avg'd 71 I think and he bowled youth state with some of his bowling friends he had already, and family tournament which we went to the state part of it which was kewl for him, and he qualified for the youth missouri olympics by bowling descent in state LOL.

this year he was a little stronger and about half way in he moved up to a 8 pound ball, and doing alright now he is up to about a 85 avg and having fun, he is also left handed, so drop ball around 1st arrow and over hook the lane with a vizaball LOLOL without really trying to throw the hook, at times he tries to force a hook already from  seeing other kids doing it, and have to remind him that he is doing ok if not better then some of them and he is about 3-4 years younger then most of them lolol

@ start of 2008 my daughter started bowling in the bumper league and she is 4 but she is really tiny, and she will prob bowl there for a few years with how small she is before she could throw with 1 hand...and get it down without bumpers then I will move her up of course

so just enjoy it, and more they are @ bowling alley when young the more they want to do it, I noticed
