What is the scoring limit for a kid like this?
« on: February 11, 2012, 10:45:46 PM »
Undoubtedly, there are a number of young bowlers with similar -- or even better -- scoring "credentials" ... but what does this say about today's scoring environment?

Keep in mind that when I came to this area (of west central Florida) in 1966 -- even though there were twice as many centers and more than three times as many bowlers -- there wasn't a single perfect game rolled in this area until 1973.

I dunno. It doesn't seem like there are scoring liits these day except the 300/900 cap that is. Guy out of Az shot 2-886 sets this season. It is on bowl.com home page. One was on a sport pattern.

Every couple weeks we are hearing about yet another record being broken. It is what it is. Something should probably change but there are too many different ideas out there about what to chang and so the industry cannot find consensus.

On top of that, it is like MLB and the steroid era. Hard to put the genie back in the bottle. What do future bowlers, who will never have a chance to post these numbers, measure up to? (if we change something that is)

For instance, if the scoring pace is brought back down to 210-215 avg is the top end of most leagues, wouldn't that discourage participation?

I don't know the answer. I have ideas...but nobody is listening to me...lol.

It wasn't that long ago that the 60-home-run barrier was being surpassed in major-league baseball, but does anyone consider it a major problem that such hasn't been the case in recent seasons?

Scoring limit? I dont think there should ever be a limit, in my mind that is basically saying you shouldnt do the best you can do because you can only score to that certain limit. It's not like this kid is doing it all in a junior league, he's doing it in in multiple adult leagues where I'm sure there are other people in the leagues posting similar scores.

Bowling is a "sport" so you do still have to execute your shots, even on a ths. Some people are really good at a sport and others might not be as good.

I think the question is not whether there should be a "limit"...more what this is doing to the sport.  I mean there are bowlers around 30 years old with 100 300 games.  Now with scoring climbing higher and higher in 20 years we'll talk about the guy that's 30 with 1,000 300 games (look at the exponential curve scoring is on).  At that point the 300/800s will mean very little.  It's already bad enough when you get the front 9 in a competitive league and the guy next to you is barely even giving you regular lane courtesy, let alone actually being interested in what you're doing.  Imagine if everyone went and played golf and shot 80....and guys were shooting 59 every other week at club tournaments....would it mean very much?

In Florida there are many many many very good and great juniors and recently turned adult bowlers.

What with Kegel down hear and several very good college programs it is impressive to see.

One guy of note is State high school champ this year Michael Coffey age 15 I believe.  I've watched this guy at the Loschetter sport shot tournaments and he is a horse...since age 13.   He can throw the ball from 23 mph strike balls down to 14 and can score from inside to outside with Urethane to Highly reactive.

To get a feel for how good he can bowl on league type conditions go to the FHSAA state tournament results for 2011.

There are several other absolutely great young bowlers and many other very fantastic.  Many two handers are coming up that are very good also.

Stay tuned....

And how many tournaments has he won?  I have no 300/800 to my resume, the only  honor score I hold is a 290.  Yet, I just won my 7th tournament yesterday at the age of 19... I'd rather win a tournament than shoot 300/800 any day of the week.

My question is why is this kid bowling in Adult Leagues? Is there a loop hole that allows kids to bowl in adult leagues and still be in the youth program?

Just curious, it seems this kid has talent therefore you would think there would be some college programs interested in him after he graduates high school.

Why does there have to be a scoring limit?

Why can't we just accept the fact that technology has outpaced the game?  It happens in all sports.

If you hit the ball far with a wooden bat, you'll hit even further with metal or composite.  If they regulate equipment then just get an edge by taking PEDs.

If you can ski fast with wooden skis, try this new fiberglass or polymer.  Bike not fast enough?  Watch how fast you can go when we reduce the weight and add all this new stuff.

Complain all you want about the scoring environment, but whatever they put in place will eventually be defeated by technology.

Why do bowlers get upset when they read articles like this?  Why is it so hard to imagine that the kid might have some talent?   And even if he doesn't, he's still scoring.  The object of the sport (game) is to knock down the pins.  Doesn't matter if you have the perfect form or are just chucking the ball fast and straight.....the pins still fall down.

that "guy" with 2 886's this year happens to be Brett Wolfe.. the 2002 abc masters champ (which he won as an amatuer.) and is the avg leader for the past 4-5 years at usbc nationals, which he usually uses an old school urethane blue hammer..

you can move up to adults before you turn 18 if you have your parent/guardian sign a waiver permitting you to do so, or some orginations now let jrs bowl with adults in tournaments and their winnings, should they cash, convert over to SMART scholarship funds..

as far as the kid goes, we'll see if he ever makes it out of the house bowler phase..i hope the kid gets good, always nice to see up and coming talent..  i know plenty of people who will only bowl on walls just so they can shoot honor scores to make themselves think they are good, and have never bowled a tournament in their life..

there are too many pros and cons to bowling nowadays, but it dug itself this hole with jacked up bowling balls and caked up house shots..

I am sure he is fantastic and a natural talent and has a powerhouse release.

I believe all these areas mentioned are often separate skills.

High scoring honor scores, sport shot bowling, and winning tournaments.  Three different mental skills and talents.

I personally at my age wish I could be best in the honor score bowling.  Unless someone comes up with some big buck handicap tournaments again!  FUN!

In response to bowling in adult leagues at his age, it shouldn't be a problem.  Remember, college bowling only adheres to NCAA regulations for the women.  For men, the only option is to be on a club team, and in those cases you can bowl in adult leagues.
